Kuroda pitches Yanks past Rangers
Jul 26, 2013 - 12:44 AM Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - New York's Hiroki Kuroda outdueled his Texas counterpart Derek Holland, and the visiting Yankees earned a split a of their four-game series against the Rangers with a 2-0 victory on Thursday afternoon.Kuroda (10-6) didn't allow a run for the third time in his last four outings, holding the Rangers to six hits, all singles, over seven strong innings.
"He's been a constant in our rotation for the last two years," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of his starter. "He's given us big innings and big wins."
Holland (8-6), who tossed a two-hit shutout in the Bronx on June 27, was a hard-luck loser after being charged for two runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings.
"I was doing everything I could to match Kuroda pitch for pitch," Holland said. "You can only control so much."
Yankees catcher Austin Romine had three hits, including two of his team's five doubles. He led off the sixth with one and came around to score on another by Brent Lillibridge.
Holland left the game after Robinson Cano doubled with one out in the eighth. Vernon Wells, who made a sliding catch with runners on the corners to end the sixth, greeted reliever Tanner Scheppers with a single. New York then grabbed a 2-0 lead when Eduardo Nunez hustled to beat out a potential double play grounder to second.
David Robertson retired the Rangers in order in the eighth and Mariano Rivera pitched around a ninth-inning single to collect his 33rd save of the season.
