Hunter lifts Tigers past White Sox in 12
Aug 5, 2013 - 1:21 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Torii Hunter's RBI single in the 12th inning lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox to complete a three-game sweep at Comerica Park.Miguel Cabrera, who sat out with a sore left hip, opened the frame with a pinch-hit single. Matt Tuiasosopo replaced the hobbled Cabrera on the bases and quickly advanced to second on Austin Jackson's sacrifice bunt. Hunter followed with a line drive base hit to left-center to plate the game-winning run.
"I just wanted to get a pitch I could handle," Hunter said of his final at- bat. "He had to come to me 2-0 and I was able to capitalize on a strike."
Hunter, who entered the game in the 10th as a pinch-hitter finished 2-for-2, while Alex Avila and Ramon Santiago added one RBI apiece for the Tigers, who went 8-0 on their eight-game homestand.
Bruce Rondon (1-1) earned the win after spinning a pair of scoreless innings. Starter Rick Porcello had one of his strongest outings of the season, allowing just one run on eight hits over 7 2/3 innings.
Dylan Axelrod (1-1) was pegged with the loss after giving up the game-winner.
Chicago starter Andre Rienzo gave up two runs on four hits over six-plus innings.
Detroit finally got to the Brazilian-born right-hander in the seventh inning. Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta walked before Avila laced a double to right field to bring Martinez around. After Jose Iglesias grounded out, Peralta scored on Santiago's sacrifice fly to center.
Paul Konerko, though, tied the game in the ninth with a leadoff homer to left- center.
"We're just trying to get through and you just try to do the best you can at the moments that you're in there playing," Konerko said of his team's struggles. "There's not a lot of positives."
Adam Dunn, who finished the game 4-for-5, crushed a leadoff homer in the fourth to give the White Sox an early lead. It was Dunn's 26th homer of the year.
