Royals rout Twins

Aug 6, 2013 - 5:42 AM Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Jeremy Guthrie tossed his second career shutout as the Kansas City Royals dismantled the Minnesota Twins, 13-0, in the opener of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium.

Guthrie (12-7) scattered four hits and a walk while striking out seven to reach the 12-win plateau for the first time in his career. The right-hander also tossed a shutout on May 4 earlier this season.

Eric Hosmer went 3-for-5 with a homer and five RBI, while Billy Butler, Mike Moustakas and Alcides Escobar finished with two RBI apiece for the Royals, who are 14-3 since the All-Star break.

"It was the least stressful game of the season. It was literally stress-free. I can't remember a game all year that didn't have any stressful moments, but this game stress-free," Royals manager Ned Yost said.

Kevin Correia (7-8) was touched for six runs on seven hits in just two innings.

"Correia just didn't have it. He couldn't make a pitch and they were banging him early," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. "We kind of hung in there, but they ended blowing the game open."

Kansas City scored six runs in the second inning. With the bases loaded, Lorenzo Cain walked to force in a run. Hosmer followed with a two-run single and Butler cracked an RBI single to make it 4-0. Moustakas capped the inning with a two-run single.

Hosmer cracked a three-run homer in the sixth to make it 9-0.

The Royals added four more in the seventh to account for the final margin. With two on and no outs, Escobar ripped a two-run single to center. After Jarrod Dyson grounded out, Justin Maxwell singled up the middle to bring Escobar around. Hosmer doubled to put runners in scoring position for Butler, who grounded out to short, but it was enough to score Maxwell to make it 13-0.
