White Sox take out Twins
Aug 18, 2013 - 4:28 AM Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Dayan Viciedo clubbed a three-run homer and Chris Sale spun seven solid innings, as the Chicago White Sox edged the Minnesota Twins, 8-5, Saturday in the third tilt of a four-game series at Target Field.Sale (9-11) struck out eight while yielding three runs on nine hits and one walk to notch his third straight victory.
Chicago reliever Nate Jones served up a two-run blast to Ryan Doumit in the eighth to bring the Twins within 6-5, but Alejandro De Aza clubbed a two-run shot of his own in the ninth to restore Chicago's three-run cushion.
Addison Reed retired the Twins in order in the home half to secure his 30th save of the season.
Adam Dunn collected three hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Avisail Garcia and Paul Konerko each added an RBI for the White Sox, who snapped a season- long 10-game road skid with Friday's win.
"That was good getting a lot of runs," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "It was good all the way around."
Andrew Albers (2-1), who spun a pair of scoreless gems in his first two big league starts, was handed his first career loss after giving up five runs on eight hits over seven innings.
"He hung in there for seven innings," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said of Albers. "Pretty good performance other than you take away a couple of bad pitches."
Joe Mauer registered two RBI and a run scored in the setback, Minnesota's fourth in its last five games.
The White Sox ended Albers' scoreless streak in the first, as De Aza smacked a leadoff single and moved to second on a groundout. Alexei Ramirez followed with a blooper that found grass in shallow center field, allowing De Aza to reach third while Ramirez hustled into second.
Konerko's grounder to short scored De Aza for a 1-0 lead.
Sale breezed through the first eight hitters in order, but the Twins strung together four straight two-out hits in the third to take the lead.
Pedro Florimon and Brian Dozier started the rally with consecutive singles before Mauer and Josh Willingham belted back-to-back doubles to give the Twins a 3-1 edge.
Chicago answered with a two-out rally of its own in the next half-inning, as Dunn and Garcia stroked back-to-back doubles, with Garcia plating Dunn to bring the White Sox within one.
After Jeff Keppinger worked a walk, Viciedo crushed a 1-1 slider into the seats in left field to provide the White Sox with a 5-3 lead.
Chicago added an insurance run in the eighth, which started with De Aza being hit by a pitch. After consecutive fly outs, Konerko singled to center and Caleb Thielbar was called in from the bullpen.
Thielbar got Dunn to lift a fly ball to left, but Willingham lost the ball in the twilight, allowing De Aza to score for a 6-3 lead.
