Pettitte helps Yanks complete four-game sweep of Blue Jays
Aug 23, 2013 - 2:42 AM Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - New York has the Toronto Blue Jays' number at Yankee Stadium. At this point, the Bronx Bombers need all the help they can get.
Andy Pettitte tossed six innings of one-run ball and Curtis Granderson smacked a solo homer in the Yankees' 5-3 win over the Blue Jays to sweep a four-game set.
New York has won 13 in a row and 22 of its past 24 meetings against its AL East rivals from north of the border in the Bronx.
Pettitte (9-9) allowed four hits and three walks to pick up the win for the Yankees, who are six games behind the Boston Red Sox for the AL East lead and 3 1/2 back of the Oakland Athletics for the AL's second wild-card spot.
"We're making up ground, and that's what we need to continue to do," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We need to continue to win series like we've been doing, and continue to pitch well and swing the bats. Obviously, each day you're able to make up a little ground, it seems more attainable and that's good for the guys in that room."
J.A. Happ (3-3) surrendered four runs on three hits and five walks over 5 1/3 frames for Toronto, which has dropped five consecutive contests.
This contest started after a rain delay of nearly 3 1/2 hours.
J.P. Arencibia led off the fifth with a homer to get the Blue Jays on the board, but the Yankees plated two in the home half and three more in the sixth to surge ahead.
Granderson's leadoff shot and a Vernon Wells RBI fielder's choice grounder gave New York the lead in the fifth.
Three straight one-out walks in the sixth, two from Happ and one from Brad Lincoln, loaded the bases for Eduardo Nunez, who lined a two-run single to center. A Chris Stewart RBI groundout made it 5-1.
"I just walked two guys in the sixth inning and cost us the ball game," Happ noted. "I felt good making pitches, doing everything I could. I felt good about the way the game was going. Some crazy stuff happened in this game that I'm just not going to talk about."
A Munenori Kawasaki RBI single and Edwin Encarnacion run-scoring groundout cut the deficit to 5-3 in the seventh. Boone Logan entered from the bullpen with men on first and second, and struck out pinch-hitter Adam Lind to end the inning.
Preston Claiborne tossed a scoreless eighth and David Robertson fired a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his second save of the season.
