Indians sweep White Sox, inch closer to wild card
Sep 16, 2013 - 6:20 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Nick Swisher, Asdrubal Cabrera and Matt Carson homered as the Cleveland Indians continued their dominance over the Chicago White Sox this season with a 7-1 victory on Sunday. The Indians waited out a rain delay that last over four hours before sweeping their third four-game series from the White Sox in 2013, marking the first time in the 113-year history of the franchise that it completed three four- game sweeps of a single opponent in the same season.
It also marked the first time the feat has been accomplished in the majors since the Dodgers swept three four-game sets against the Mets in 1963.
Zach McAllister (8-9) allowed one run on six hits while striking out five over 6 2/3 innings for the Indians, who trail the Tigers by five games for first place in the AL Central.
Additionally, Cleveland is a half-game behind Tampa Bay and Texas in the wild card standings.
"I just felt like I was pretty aggressive with my fastball for the most part," McAllister said. "I was able to locate it and keep them off balance a little bit."
Chris Sale (11-13) gave up six runs on nine hits while striking out seven over 5 2/3 innings for the White Sox, who have dropped six straight.
"There's not much you can do when someone is on to you and kind of has your number," said Sale of Cleveland's dominance. "You just have to try to fight through that and battle through it."
The Indians got on the board in the second inning. Carlos Santana singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Carson's single to left.
Carson's homer to right-center field in the fifth made it 2-0.
Cleveland tacked on four more runs in the sixth to create some distance. Swisher led off with a homer to left. Ryan Raburn and Santana followed with back-to-back singles. Cabrera's one-out homer to left made it a 6-0 contest.
The White Sox left men on second and third in the bottom half.
Chicago finally got on the board in the seventh. Jeff Keppinger singled, moved to second on Jordan Danks' single and raced home on Josh Phegley's single to center.
Swisher's homer in the ninth accounted for the final margin.
