Final
Medlen, Braves down Fish
Apr 10, 2013 - 4:11 AMVideo
Medlen tossed seven strong innings of one-run ball in the Braves' 3-2 win over the Miami Marlins in the middle test of a three-game set.
Medlen (1-1) surrendered an unearned run on three hits and two walks for the Braves, who have won five in a row and are off to their best start since 2007.
Atlanta had won 23 consecutive Medlen starts during the regular season until he yielded two runs on six hits and four walks over five frames in the Braves' 2-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday.
"I made some better pitches," Medlen said.
Evan Gattis smacked a two-run homer and Justin Upton added an RBI double in the victory.
Wade LeBlanc (0-2) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over six frames for Miami, which has dropped 16 of its last 19 contests against Atlanta.
"We just have to keep grinding," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.
The Braves struck with a pair of runs in the opening frame. Andrelton Simmons lined a one-out single to right and after Upton struck out, Gattis clubbed a two-run shot to center.
Miami got a run in the second on Rob Brantly's sacrifice fly, but were unable to capitalize with runners in scoring position over the next two innings. Giancarlo Stanton flew out to center with two outs and Juan Pierre on second, while Adeiny Hechavarria grounded into a fielder's choice with two outs and runners on the corners in the fourth.
The teams traded runs in the eighth. After Simmons singled and advanced to second on an A.J. Ramos throwing error, he came home when Upton belted a double to center. But Placido Polanco's two-out RBI single to right in the eighth cut the deficit to 3-2.
Craig Kimbrel walked just one Marlin in the ninth to pick up his fourth save of the year.
Game Notes
Polanco had two of Miami's four hits ... The Marlins were 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, while Atlanta finished 1-for-9 with RISP ... Pierre tallied his first steal of the year.
