Westbrook goes the distance as Cardinals shut out Reds
Apr 11, 2013 - 6:21 AMVideo
Westbrook (1-1) surrendered just five hits and four walks in the gem for the Cardinals, who have won four of their last five games.
"Jake was terrific," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "It was fun to watch."
Matt Carpenter smacked a two-run homer among his four hits, while Carlos Beltran and Matt Adams added two-run shots. Jon Jay smacked a solo blast in the triumph.
Homer Bailey (1-1) allowed seven runs on nine hits and three walks over five frames for Cincinnati, which dropped the final two games of the set after winning the opener.
"Their pitching shut us down," Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker admitted. "Westbrook was tough today. It makes it tough to score runs and makes it tough to beat the opposition."
After stranding runners on the corners in the third and fourth, the Cardinals erupted for four runs in the fifth and sixth and added two more in the seventh.
St. Louis tallied four straight two-out hits in the fifth. Jay clubbed a solo homer to center just over the glove of a leaping Shin-Soo Choo at the wall. After Carpenter singled to right, Matt Holliday ripped a double down the left- field line to bring Carpenter home. Beltran stepped up next and cracked a two- run shot into the Cardinals' bullpen in right.
Adams and Carpenter cracked two-run shots in the sixth. Adams lined an RBI double in the seventh and Westbrook snuck a run-scoring single through the hole on the left side to make it 10-0.
Game Notes
David Freese registered two hits and a run scored for the Cardinals ... St. Louis was 5-for-15 with runners in scoring position, while the Reds finished 0-for-5 with RISP.
