Mets rout Nationals behind Wheeler

Sep 1, 2013 - 5:44 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Seven New York Mets players drove in at least one run as the visitors pounded the Washington Nationals for 17 hits en route to a 11-3 victory.

Omar Quintanilla, Daniel Murphy, Juan Lagares and Eric Young Jr. had two RBI apiece while Ike Davis, Matt den Dekker and Zack Wheeler each drove in one run for the Mets, who have won three straight.

Wheeler (7-3) gave up two runs on five hits and a walk over 6 2/3 innings.

"I just tried to get quick outs," Wheeler said.

Jayson Werth, Denard Span and Ian Desmond all drove in a run for the Nationals, who have lost the first two games of this three-game set.

"To lose the first two is definitely tough, but we have to turn the page," Span said.

Dan Haren (8-12) struggled through 2 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits to suffer his first loss since July 22.

The Mets got their offense going in the second. D'Arnaud and Lagares hit back-to-back one-out singles. After den Dekker struck out, Quintanilla ripped a two-out, two-RBI double to center.

An inning later, Young hit a leadoff single, stole second and scored on a Murphy single. Following a single by Josh Satin, Davis scored Murphy with a sacrifice fly to left.

Travis d'Arnaud and Lagares again delivered back-to-back singles but on the latter play, Satin was thrown out at the plate. With men on first and second, den Dekker singled to left for his first career RBI.

Haren was then replaced by Tanner Roark, who walked Quintanilla and Wheeler, allowing Lagares to score. He then gave up a two-run single to Young and the Mets had an 8-0 advantage.

Washington finally got on the board in the sixth. Anthony Rendon was hit by a pitch, Span singled up the middle and Bryce Harper was walked to load the bases. Werth hit a sacrifice fly to left and Desmond followed with an RBI single to left center.

However, New York added three runs in the eighth. Murphy smacked a one-out RBI double deep to right field. Later in the frame, Lagares knocked a two-out, two-RBI single to center.

Scott Atchison pitched the bottom of the ninth for the Mets. He gave up back- to-back infield singles to Jhonatan Solano and Steve Lombardozzi. Rendon and Span both grounded into a fielder's choice, but Span was able to score Solano. Atchison then gave up a single to pinch-hitter Chad Tracy but retired Harper to end the game.
