Rockies cool off Dodgers
Sep 5, 2013 - 6:26 AM Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Josh Rutledge went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI as the Colorado Rockies snapped the Dodgers' six-game winning streak with a 7-5 victory over Los Angeles from Coors Field.Jorge De La Rosa (16-6) tied the National League lead in wins after tossing six solid innings, yielding just two runs on six hits. Rex Brothers saved it with a hitless ninth.
Michael Cuddyer had a pair of hits and two RBI for Colorado, which put the breaks on a two-game skid. Todd Helton homered while Troy Tulowitzki drove in two.
Edinson Volquez (9-11) made his first start as a Dodger after being signed as a free agent on Aug. 30 and lasted just four innings, allowing four runs on six hits. Michael Young had three hits and drove in a pair for LA, which still holds a major league-best 36-9 record since the All-Star break.
"We're playing fine," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "I like where we're at."
Young plated Jerry Hairston Jr. with an opposite field hit to right with two away in the opening inning, providing LA an early cushion.
Tulowitzki's double off the wall in left brought home Rutledge in the bottom half to tie the score, and after a wild pitch advanced the Rockies' shortstop to third, Cuddyer hit a sac fly to right to give Colorado a 2-1 edge.
Helton's 12th of the season cleared the wall in right to open the second and give the Rockies a 3-1 lead, which they stretched to 4-1 an inning later on a Cuddyer RBI single to center.
LA got a run back in the sixth. After consecutive singles by Nick Punto, Hanley Ramirez and Young to load the bases, Scott Van Slyke grounded into a double play to plate Punto. With runners on second and third with two away, A.J. Ellis grounded back to the pitcher to end the threat.
Colorado plated three insurance runs in the seventh. Rutledge knocked home Corey Dickerson with his third hit of the game, Tulowitzki's sac fly to center plated Dexter Fowler and Rutledge scored when Carlos Marmol was called for a balk.
Those runs proved to be crucial when LA responded with three of its own in the top of the eighth off Matt Belisle. Young singled home Ramirez and advanced when Ellis reached first on Rutledge's error. Juan Uribe and Skip Schumaker delivered consecutive RBI hits after that, but Manny Corpas took the hill and struck out pinch-hitters Carl Crawford and Yasiel Puig.
"It's a gutsy pitch. One of his greatest strengths is he has a slow heartbeat. He's pitched in some big games," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Corpas fanning Puig. "The book says you have to throw him a slider right there and he took a chance and threw it in."
Game Notes
The Dodgers' magic number to clinch the National League West remains at 12 ... LA went 5-for-13 with runners in scoring position while Colorado went 3-for-11 with RISP ... Both teams had 11 hits ... Colorado third baseman Nolan Arenado departed with a right thumb contusion.
