Darvish fans 14, Rangers dominate Diamondbacks
Aug 2, 2013 - 4:56 AM Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks flew back to Arlington for an interleague makeup game that was postponed May 29 after rain left Rangers Ballpark in unplayable conditions. On Thursday, the Diamondbacks, for the second time this season, were buried under a deluge of strikeouts by Texas starter Yu Darvish.
The Japanese right-hander matched a career-high with 14 punchouts in a 7-1 win.
Darvish (10-5), who also fanned 14 Diamondbacks on May 27, scattered five singles and didn't issue a walk over seven scoreless innings. He has allowed just one run in three outings since coming off the disabled list.
"(Darvish) was just outstanding tonight. Everything he threw up there, they just couldn't get on," said Ron Washington, who picked up his 580th career win as manager, one shy of Bobby Valentine for the most in Rangers history.
After mashing three straight walk-off homers in a sweep of the Angels, the Rangers belted solo home runs in three consecutive innings off Arizona rookie Zeke Spruill (0-1).
Spruill, making his first major league start, was tagged for five runs and seven hits in four frames.
A.J. Pierzynski opened the scoring with a blast to right-center field in the second and added a two-run single in the seventh.
Mitch Moreland led off the third by sending a no-doubter to right, and David Murphy launched a two-out shot to right-center to spark a three-run fourth that also saw Leonys Martin plate a pair with a double
Martin Prado spoiled Texas' shutout bid with an RBI single off reliever Joakim Soria in the ninth.
"I feel like when he goes out there he's looking to strike 10-plus out every night," Arizona outfielder Adam Eaton said of Darvish. "He has the stuff to do it."
Game Notes
Darvish has struck out 14 batters four times this year ... Rangers right fielder Nelson Cruz left in the bottom of the seventh with tightness in his left quad ... Texas' Elvis Andrus extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a double ... Spruill appeared in four games for the D'backs earlier this year and allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings ... The D'backs placed catcher Miguel Montero on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain, selected the contract of catcher Tuffy Gosewisch from Reno and optioned pitcher Chaz Roe to the Triple-A club ... Gosewisch, 29, made his major league debut on Thursday, going 1-for-3.
