Dye, Uribe leads White Sox past Indians
Apr 14, 2007 - 6:34 AM CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- It was supposed to be home sweet home for the Cleveland Indians. The Chicago White Sox just ignored the script.Jermaine Dye and Juan Uribe homered as the White Sox recorded a 6-4 victory over the Indians.
This game was the first actual non-road contest for the Indians following four straight home postponements last week and three "home" games played at Miller Park in Milwaukee as the city of Cleveland was recovering from being pelted with snow for much of the first week of the season.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the fourth, Uribe blasted a three-run shot to left-center off Cleveland starter Fausto Carmona to to give the White Sox a 4-1 lead. Dye followed with a two-run home run in the next inning to push the advantage to 6-1.
"He's the type of guy (Uribe) who can carry the club when he swings the bat good," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "Right now, he has discipline at the plate."
Javier Vazquez (2-0) did just enough to win, surrendering two runs and eight hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. The righthander, who improved to 3-1 in his career at Jacobs Field, benefited from the Indians going 3-for-20 with runners in scoring position.
"It's ridiculous," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "We're too good of a hitting team to be doing that. Our approach was very poor, to say the least, with runners in scoring position."
"It gets frustrating," Indians second baseman Josh Barfield said. "We have to get those runs in. We had a lot of opportunities, but they made good pitches in key situations. We fouled pitches back that we have to put in play."
Three relievers combined to pitch the next 2 2/3 innings before closer Bobby Jenks allowed an RBI groundout on his way to his third save in four chances.
Carmona (0-1) yielded six runs and seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts in his first start of the year. It marked the first time an Indians starter failed to make it into the sixth inning.
Ryan Garko had a career-high four hits and scored twice for the Indians, who failed to hit a home run for the first time this season.
