Final/10
Dye delivers go-ahead hit; White Sox win fourth straight
Apr 21, 2007 - 11:02 PM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Jermaine Dye is picking up where he left off last year against the Detroit Tigers.Dye doubled home the go-ahead run and scored on a sacrifice fly by Juan Uribe in the 10th inning as the Chicago White Sox extended their winning streak to four games with a 7-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Last season, Dye hit .386 (27-for-70) with eight homers and 14 RBI against the Tigers.
"We battled back again today," Dye said. "I had the chance to come through with the big hit because our bullpen did such a good job."
On Saturday, Dye hurt the Tigers again, victimizing Fernando Rodney (1-4). Paul Konerko led off the 10th with a double to left off Rodney and Dye followed with a double to left, snapping a 5-5 tie.
"I don't have pain," said Rodney, who has half of Detroit's eight losses this season. "There's nothing wrong. I'm ready to pitch. I'm just not throwing like I have to. I'm a little inconsistent and I'm not getting good location."
One out later, shortstop Carlos Guillen bobbled a grounder by Darin Erstad as Dye crossed to third. Uribe then hit a sacrifice fly to left.
"He (Rodney) didn't throw well," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "He swears he's fine, but his velocity is down and his control is bad."
While Rodney faltered, Chicago's relievers continue to excel. Five White Sox relievers combined to throw three scoreless innings.
David Aardsma (2-0) struck out Craig Monroe with a runner on first to end the bottom of the ninth inning and picked up the win when the White Sox scored twice in the 10th.
"Getting ahead of the hitter and throwing strikes is the key," Aardsma said. "That's what our bullpen has been doing all season, forcing the other guys to do something."
Bobby Jenks pitched a hitless 10th inning for his sixth save in seven chances.
In Friday's 5-4 win here on Friday, White Sox relievers threw 4 1/3 shutout innings.
"The bullpen has been tremendous," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "They throw strikes and aren't afraid to attack the hitter. I hope I can continue to use these guys the way they should be used."
Carlos Guillen hit a grand slam in the first inning off Jose Contreras to stake the Tigers to a 4-0 lead.
"I threw a pitch up to him (Guillen) and he hit it hard," Contreras said through coach Joey Cora. "After the first, I settled down. I was able to minimize the damage and keep us in the game. The bullpen did the rest."
The White Sox scored three runs in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth to tie the game while Contreras retired 16 straight batters following Guiilen's grand slam.
Magglio Ordonez ended Contreras' streak with a home run in the sixth inning, giving the Tigers a 5-4 lead.
The Tigers tied the game in the eighth inning against Joel Zumaya. Jim Thome led off with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Brian Anderson, who advanced on a wild pitch. Zumaya then walked Dye before Joe Crede lined an RBI single to center.
"We have to think back on what we did last year," Zumaya said. "We have to take this one day at a time until the light bulb goes back on and we turn this around."
Detroit starter Nate Robertson retired the first nine batters he faced before running into trouble in the fourth inning. Pablo Ozuna led off the inning with a double and Robertson walked Tadahito Iguchi and Thome to load the bases.
Konerko reached safely on an error by third baseman Brandon Inge as Ozuna scored. Iguchi scored the second run on a fielder's choice by Dye and Crede capped the inning with an RBI single.
The White Sox tied the game in the fifth when Ozuna reached on an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error by Robertson. Iguchi followed with a single to center and Thome plated Ozuna with a sacrifice fly.
Leyland was particularly perturbed by Detroit's three errors.
"We didn't do the things that allow you to win," Leyland said. "We didn't manage, coach, hit, pitch or catch today. It starts with me. That's my responsibility. We did some stuff today that was embarrassing. If we're not embarrassed, we should be. Myself, the coaches and everyone else. We should all be embarrassed. That was embarrassing today."
It started out well for the Tigers. Curtis Granderson doubled, Placido Polanco singled and Gary Sheffield was hit by a pitch before Carlos Guillen sent the first pitch he saw into the right field bleachers.
