White Sox get second shot at Wang, Yankees
Jun 6, 2007 - 2:54 PM NY Yankees (25-31) at Chi White Sox (26-28) 8:11 pm EDTCHICAGO (Ticker) -- Three weeks ago, New York Yankees' ace Chien-Ming Wang stymied the Chicago White Sox in an 8-1 win. When the Yankees visit the White Sox on Wednesday, the home team will get another shot.
Wang (4-4, 4.19 ERA) went seven innings on May 16, yielding one run and six hits. That start began a stretch where he has gone 3-1 and not allowed more than three runs.
The Taiwanese righthander will have an improved offense on his side as well.
The once-struggling Yankees have won five of their past seven games, averaging close to seven runs per contest. Bobby Abreu and Robinson Cano are beginning to break out of their respective slumps and All-Star Alex Rodriguez has homered in two of the last three games to push his major league-leading total to 21.
Former New York hurler Javier Vazquez (3-3, 3.95) will be charged with quieting the charge. The 30-year-old righthander enjoyed his finest outing of the season on Friday at Toronto, tossing eight scoreless innings to pick up his first win since April 13.
Vazquez went 14-10 in 2004 for the Yankees and was part of the collapse against the Boston Red Sox in the American League Championship Series.
After the White Sox won the series opener on Monday, 6-4, the Yankees came back on Tuesday with a 7-3 win to even the series.
