Burres quiets Angels offense as Orioles cruise past Angels

Jul 1, 2007 - 3:31 AM BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- Rookie Brian Burres could care less if the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are the winningest team in the majors.

Burres tossed seven-plus solid innings and Ramon Hernandez homered as the Baltimore Orioles posted a 6-3 victory over the Angels on Saturday.

Burres (4-2), who improved to 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA against Anaheim this season, has twice silenced the Anaheim offense, which entered the day as the best hitting team in the majors (.292) and the sixth-highest scoring team in baseball.

The lefthander was pulled after a career-high 7 2/3 innings after allowing an RBI double to Vladimir Guerrero, yielding three runs and five hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

"He knew going in what we were up against," Orioles interim manager Dave Trembley said. "We needed a quality start. We really needed to max him out and we did."

In the past two games, Baltimore's bullpen was heavily taxed, and Trembley, who is 6-4 since taking over for Sam Perlozzo on June 18, needed a good outing from his starter.

"To say the least, it was a big game for him and it was a big game for our team," Trembley said.

Burres impressed the Angels both times they have seen him.

"We saw a lot of the same stuff," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We didn't get many good looks at him."

Howie Kendrick, whose 12-game hitting streak was ended, shook his head and smiled when talking about Burres. "We've been having trouble with those soft-tossing pitchers," Kendrick said.

Hernandez, who has batted just .158 (3-for-19) since his return from the disabled list on June 22, sent a pitch from Angels reliever Hector Carrasco over the fence in right for a three-run blast, his first since June 2, which also came against Carrasco, who has surrendered eight home runs in 38 1/3 innings this season.

Paul Shuey, who is seeing his first major league action since 2003 this season, recorded the final four outs without incident for his first save since August 22, 2002, as a member of the Dodgers.

"I was excited about it. That's the honest truth," Shuey said. "I'm at the point right now, with the hip and everything else, I don't know how long it will last, so I'll take it when I can get it."

Kevin Millar had two RBI and scored twice for the Orioles, who snapped a two-game skid.

Bartolo Colon (6-4), who has lost four of his last five decisions, took the loss as he surrendered three runs and eight hits over six frames with two walks and six strikeouts.

Chone Figgins, who finished June with a .461 batting average (53-for-115), hit an RBI triple and scored a run for the Angels, who have dropped four of their last five contests. He had 17 multiple-hit games over the last month and his 53 hits in June established a new club record for hits in a single month.
