Ordonez blasts pair of homers as Tigers rout A's

Aug 12, 2007 - 9:55 PM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Magglio Ordonez capped an impressive weekend with a phenomenal second inning on Sunday.

Ordonez belted a pair of home runs - a solo shot to lead off the frame and a three-run blast to cap the eight-run inning - as the Detroit Tigers cruised to an 11-6 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.

The power display enabled Ordonez to join Al Kaline as the only Tiger to hit two home runs in one inning. Kaline accomplished the feat in the sixth inning against Kansas City on April 17, 1955.

"I put a good swing and it went out," Ordonez said. "The second one I hit it good. The second one I said, 'I hit two in one inning. That's impressive.' But I never thought I was only the second one (in Tigers history)."

In addition, Ordonez's four RBI on Sunday gave him 102 for the season, becoming the first Tiger since Dean Palmer in 1999-2000 to have back-to-back 100-plus RBI seasons.

Ordonez has feasted on Oakland pitching this weekend. In the three-game series, the All-Star is 8-for-12 with three home runs, eight RBI and five runs scored. The Venezuela native also raised his American League-best batting average from .348 to .357 in the three-game set.

"I never hit two homers before, not even in Little League," Ordonez said. "I've seen four in one game, and three, but not two in one inning."

After Ordonez's solo home run, Carlos Guillen scored on Mike Rabelo's groundout to tie the game. Brandon Inge promptly singled to left field to plate Craig Monroe and Ryan Rayburn for a 4-2 lead.

Gary Sheffield added an RBI single before Ordonez chased Oakland rookie southpaw Dallas Braden with a three-run shot to left.

Braden (1-7), who allowed eight runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings, hasn't been victorious since defeating the Baltimore Orioles on April 24.

"Everything I threw was up in the zone," Braden said. "I threw a change it got hit, I threw a fastball it got hit harder.

"I was the sole factor that caused our team to lose."

Detroit starter Nate Robertson (7-9) was far from flawless, but managed to avoid the big inning. The lefthander allowed four runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings, walking five and striking out six.

"We've talked about starting pitching has to set a tone," Robertson said. "I wasn't my sharpest today but I pitched well enough to win. We've had some good performances where we didn't have the wins in this long stretch. Now we're starting to do all the things at the same time."

Tim Byrdak and Yorman Bazardo, who was called up prior to Sunday's game, combined to finish off the Athletics.

Oakland struck first after Marco Scutaro belted a two-run homer to give the Athletics a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

Scutaro and Dan Johnson added run-scoring doubles in the fourth to cut the Tigers' lead to 8-4.

"I got some pitches to hit," Scutaro said. "I hit it good and found some holes too. You still gotta play hardest for nine innings and 27 outs."

Detroit added solo tallies in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings - the last run a result of Sean Casey's RBI single - to salt away the game.

Tigers second baseman Placido Polanco recorded his 143rd consecutive errorless game, matching Luis Castillo's major league record. Castillo established the record with the Minnesota Twins from May 30, 2006-June 5, 2007.

"It's an honor," Polanco said. "You have seen so many players, so many great players. It's just great."

"We're all here to win games, the same purpose, and that's what matters. I have the record today but most importantly, we won the game. That's what we're here for. Seriously, who cares if I hit .300 or not? We'd rather win games."
