11-run inning propels Devil Rays past Orioles

Aug 29, 2007 - 4:05 AM BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- Less than one week after giving up a record 30 runs to the Texas Rangers, the Baltimore Orioles let the Tampa Bay Devil Rays tie a record of their own.

The Devil Rays tied a franchise high by scoring 11 runs in the top of the eighth inning to come from behind and defeat the struggling Orioles, 15-8, on Tuesday.

The 11 runs also tied an Orioles record set in 1962 for the most runs surrendered in one inning at home.

"It was nice to be able to do that after a tough game yesterday," Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "We've been on both ends of that."

"When you bring in four pitchers in one inning, you know your are in trouble," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. "It's that simple."

Trailing, 6-3, in the top of the eighth, Tampa Bay loaded the bases with one out against Orioles reliever Jim Hoey. After Dioner Navarro walked to cut the deficit to two runs, pinch hitter Greg Norton tied the game, 6-6, with a single to right field. Carl Crawford's RBI single to right gave the Devil Rays the lead, and Carlos Pena and Jonny Gomes each had two-run hits to add to Tampa Bay's outburst.

"I had a lot of fun," Gomes said. "It shows the potential of our batters. When we take the at-bats one-by-one we have the potential to do that more."

Pena hit his team-leading 31st home run, and he and Crawford each had three RBI for the Devil Rays, who won have now won four of five.

Hoey (1-3) gave up five runs in one-third of an inning, as he suffered his third straight loss in as many appearances as Baltimore dropped its seventh straight game.

"I thought when he (Hoey) first got here he established the strike zone," Trembley said. "That's not happening now."

Miguel Tejada hit two of the season-high six home runs for the Orioles, who have given up 85 runs during their skid.

After Crawford's RBI single gave Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Nick Markakis hit a two-run shot in the bottom half and Tejada followed with a solo shot to left to give Baltimore a 3-1 lead.

Aubrey Huff homered to right in the sixth and Ramon Hernandez launched a shot to left in the seventh, which had given the Orioles a 6-3 lead.

Baltimore starter Daniel Cabrera was in line for the win, pitching six effective innings, allowing three runs and five hits while striking out eight.

Tejada and Kevin Millar blasted back-to-back solo shots in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Orioles also tied a Camden Yards club record with their six home runs in one game.

"It's a nice accomplishment, but it doesn't do much because you lost the game," Trembley said. "We lost the game where it's not a whole lot of fun to lose like we did."
