Anderson, Guerrero lift Angels in rout of Orioles

Sep 13, 2007 - 3:39 AM By Rich Dubroff PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer

BALTIMORE (Ticker) - Garret Anderson had five RBI and Vladimir Guerrero added four more to power the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to an 18-6 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night.

The win - their sixth straight road victory - cut the AL West-leading Angels' magic number to nine.

Anderson had a two-run double in a five-run first inning off Baltimore starter Daniel Cabrera. Anderson added a two-run blast in the fourth, his 16th of the season, and a run-scoring single in the fifth.

Guerrero, who hit two home runs in Tuesday night's game, had a run-scoring single in the second, a two-run single in the fifth, and drove in his fourth on an infield out in the eighth.

The Angels scored five runs in the first in a gaffe-filled inning, which featured key errors by second baseman Brian Roberts and shortstop Miguel Tejada. The first five batters reached base, before the sixth, Casey Kotchman, drove in the fourth run with a sacrifice fly.

"We got in a good situation early," Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said. "We ran the bases aggressively. We kept playing the game hard."

Chone Figgins scored three runs, had two hits and two stolen bases for Anaheim.

"It makes it tough on other teams," Figgins said of the Angels' early success. "They know they have to put some runs on the board themselves."

Cabrera (9-16), who lost for the fourth straight time, is tied for the most losses in baseball. He gave up a career-high 10 runs, eight earned in 4 1/3 innings.

"He wanted to pitch well tonight. I thought that's what his mindset was," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said.

The Orioles, who lost for the 18th time in their last 21 games, and for the 14th time in their last 15 home games, scored five runs off Kelvim Escobar (17-7) in the fourth. Tike Redman and Nick Markakis had home runs off Escobar, who won for the sixth time in his last seven starts.

Escobar allowed six runs in 5 1/3 innings. He recorded the 100th win of his career - and he's 13-5 against Baltimore, the most wins he's recorded against any opponent.

"I'm disappointed in the way I pitched," Escobar said. "I'm happy to get my 100th career win - a lot of work - a lot of determination."

"I have to be ready when the playoffs come."

Trembley was ejected during the five-run fourth for arguing a force-out call. Second base umpire Paul Emmel thumbed him out for the second time this season.

"It's a situation where I felt the guy was safe," Trembley said. "That's all. He was safe."

Los Angeles scored five more runs in the eighth on five walks, just one hit and a throwing error by third baseman Brandon Fahey. Orioles pitchers walked 12 Angels batters.

"I like the way we pressed every inning," Scoiscia said. "If you keep playing hard, you minimize the number of mistakes."

The Orioles have allowed 10 or more runs 14 times this season - and seven times in the last 21 games - starting with the 30-3 debacle three weeks ago.
