Ordonez, Guillen fuel White Sox in rout
Sep 30, 2007 - 10:18 PM By Rob Czajkowskyj PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterCHICAGO (Ticker) - Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen powered the Detroit Tigers to a 13-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday in the season finale for both teams.
Ordonez went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Guillen belted a pair of two-run doubles as the Tigers scored seven runs in the seventh inning to salt the game.
"Perfect day. Absolutely perfect. It couldn't have worked out better," Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "Everyone did what they were supposed to do. It couldn't have been a better day. It was a great day for the Tigers fans who came here. It was a great way to end the season."
Curtis Granderson went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases for Detroit.
Guillen doubled to right field to plate Ramon Santiago and Granderson to start the seventh-inning onslaught.
Marcus Thames also plated a pair with his double before Mike Rabelo smashed his first career home run to extend the lead to 11-3.
Ordonez started the scoring when he hit a double to left field to score Granderson in the first inning. Ordonez entered the game with a .360 batting average, tops in the American League.
"I stayed focused. You always have your goals, but this time I surpassed my goals," Tigers outfielder Ordonez said. "I try to play hard and do my best."
Guillen belted a two-run homer in the third to extend the Tigers' lead to 3-0.
The blast plated Placido Polanco, who reached 200 hits on the season after his single off White Sox starter Jose Contreras.
"My friends and teammates showed that they really wanted me to get it (200th hit) so bad," Polanco said. "It makes me happy."
Brandon Inge added to the rout with a single in the eighth inning which scored Ryan Raburn, who came in to pinch-run for Ordonez.
Jermaine Dye helped the White Sox get on the board with a single to center field which scored Josh Fields, cutting the lead 3-1 during the fourth inning.
Fields deposited a shot into the center field seats just out of reach of Granderson's glove, scoring Jerry Owens to bring the White Sox within a run during the fifth inning at 4-3.
Nate Robertson (9-13) earned the win allowing eight hits, two strikeouts and three runs over 6 2/3 innings.
Contreras (10-17), who earned the loss went 6 1/3 innings, giving up five runs and nine hits with two strikeouts.
"It was a tough season," Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We finished off the season the way we started, real bad. I take full responsibility for what happened.
"I feel proud of my players. They played real bad, they performed poorly but they showed up with the same attitude. Unfortunately, we didn't get it done."
