Cain loses no-hitter, game in seventh against Padres
Apr 10, 2007 - 4:45 AM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- In a span of 15 pitches, Matt Cain lost his no-hitter and the game against the San Diego Padres.Khalil Greene spoiled the no-hit bid with a double and scored later on a sacrifice fly by Geoff Blum, and Chris Young tossed seven scoreless innings as the Padres posted a 1-0 victory over the struggling San Francisco Giants.
Cain (0-1) survived three two-out walks in the first inning, a walk and a hit batsman in the fourth, and center fielder Dave Roberts made a running catch in left-center field to preserve the no-hitter.
However, Greene led off the seventh by roping a line drive down the left field line for a double. After Russell Branyan walked on a 3-2 pitch, Jose Cruz Jr. dropped down a perfect sacrifice. Blum then pinch hit for Young and drove a 1-2 hanging breaking ball deep down the right field line for a sacrifice fly.
Cain worked seven innings, yielding one hits and five walks in four strikes.
As good as Cain was, Young (1-0) kept pace. The righthander survived leadoff doubles in the third and seventh innings before turning over the game to the bullpen. He yielded just four hits and two walks and struck out five, including Cain with runners on first and second to end the seventh.
Cla Meredith worked a perfect eighth, striking out Barry Bonds, and Trevor Hoffman worked around a two-out double by Bengie Molina in the ninth for his second save and major league-leading 484th all-time.
The Padres' bullpen has not yielded a run in 20 2/3 innings this season.
Adrian Gonzalez added an eighth-inning single as San Diego won for the first time with just two hits since July 19, 1975.
Bonds finished 0-for-2 with two walks and Molina had two doubles for San Francisco, which has started a season 1-6 for the first time since 1980.
