Torrealba's three-run double lifts Rockies over Giants
Apr 18, 2007 - 6:02 AM DENVER (Ticker) -- The Colorado Rockies were starved looking for a big hit. Yorvit Torrealba got them just that.Torrealba hit a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Rockies to a 5-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
Colorado snapped a three-game losing streak and ended a 22-inning scoreless skid earlier in the frame.
"I was excited," Torrealba said. "Every time you help your team win you're definitely excited, especially after a three-game losing streak."
The Giants bullpen wasted another strong effort from Matt Cain, who has yet to record a win this season despite allowing just four runs in 20 innings over three starts.
"He pitched great, we thought he was there, that's the only reason he came out," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We have a three-run lead, we've got to hold it and we didn't do it."
Bochy lifted Cain after seven innings and 109 pitches. Vinnie Chulk was the first man out of the bullpen and immediately surrendered a lead-off homer to pinch-hitter Steve Finley.
Garrett Atkins notched a two-out single before Jonathan Sanchez walked Todd Helton. Matt Holliday loaded the bases with an infield single off Kevin Correia (0-1), who walked Brad Hawpe to force in a run before Torrealba cleared the bases.
"I actually thought it was going to be foul," Torrealba said. "I hit it off the end a little bit and I thought it was going to go foul. I was looking at the ball saying just go, just do something, it was up there for awhile."
Giants left fielder Todd Linden, who pinch ran for Barry Bonds in the seventh and stayed in the game in left field, tracked down Torrealba's fly ball but it glanced off his outstretched glove.
"I thought I was going to make the play," Linden said, "You've got to make the play somehow."
Brian Fuentes pitched the ninth for his third save for Colorado.
Cain did not allow a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning. The 22-year-old righthander yielded just two hits while striking out seven. Cain made it into the seventh without surrendering a hit in a 1-0 loss to San Diego on April 9.
