Young, Gonzalez help Padres hammer Rockies
Apr 21, 2007 - 6:10 AM DENVER (Ticker) -- Chris Young continues to be perfect against the team from Denver.Adrian Gonzalez had two hits, including a three-run homer in the first inning, and Young yielded just four hits in seven strong innings as the Padres crushed the Colorado Rockies, 11-1.
Mike Cameron and Rob Bowen each had three hits for San Diego, which has beaten Colorado six of the last seven times.
Young (2-1) was outstanding, yielding just a run while striking out seven.
"If you just pound the strike zone and be agressive, good things will happen," Young said. "The guys gave me an early lead and I knew I could be aggressive out there tonight. They have a solid lineup and some great hitters. It is a coincidence that I've had success against them a lot, they are a good hitting team."
The 6-10 righthander is now 4-0 all-time in six career starts vs. the Rockies.
"Chris was really good tonight," Padres manager Bud Black said. "His slider was very sharp and in the zone. He worked his fastball well and located his pitches. He worked through a good lineup. Chris has pitched well against a lot of clubs and he was determined to have a good night tonight."
With one out in the top of the first, Jose Cruz Jr. walked and Brian Giles hit a single to center field before Gonzalez belted a 3-2 pitch by Josh Fogg over the wall in center to give the Padres a 3-0 lead.
"It was a 3-2 changeup that I hit," Gonzalez said. "They had been throwing it a lot. I just wanted to stay back and he left one right down the middle of the plate."
Leading, 4-1, in the fourth, San Diego sent 10 men to the plate, driving in five runs, including an RBI single by Gonzalez, and a two-run base hit by Marcus Giles. The top five batters in the Padres order combined for 11 hits, six runs and six RBI and each starter, including Young, had at least one hit.
Fogg (0-1) was tagged for eight runs - seven earned - 11 hits and three walks in three-plus innings and struck out three.
"Josh had a lot of two-strike counts but really didn't have any sharpness to his breaking stuff," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "He also couldn't hit the spots with his fastball. He wasn't able to make consecutive good pitches."
The seven-year veteran falls to 2-2 lifetime vs. the Padres.
"It was a bad night," Fogg added. "One of those nights you want to go home and forget and go out and play again tomorrow night. That's why they play so many of them."
