Bonds hits No. 741 as Giants win seventh straight
Apr 26, 2007 - 6:18 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Barry Bonds' blast drew all the fanfare, but Pedro Feliz kept the San Francisco Giants rolling.Feliz homered in the sixth inning to snap a tie en route to the Giants' seventh straight triumph, a 6-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Bonds blasted career homer No. 741 as the Giants matched a seven-game run from June 19-25, 2004. Their 10-2 record since April 10 is the best in the major leagues.
"We always take the field with the mindset to win," Feliz said. "Not every day is going to be a win so you have to take them when they come."
"We just ran into a hot team and didn't score enough runs tonight," Dodger manager Grady Little said.
In the first inning, Bonds lined a 1-1 fastball from Dodgers starter Randy Wolf over the wall in right-center field for a three-run homer and 4-0 lead. It was his seventh blast of the season - second career against Wolf - and moved him within 14 homers of the all-time mark held by Hank Aaron.
"You like him up there in that situation," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's an impact player. When he gets up there it's an exciting time."
"You almost get to the point where you expect it," Giants center fielder Todd Linden said. "At least you're not surprised anymore."
Wolf settled down after that and the Dodgers scored a pair of runs in both the first and fourth off San Francisco starter Noah Lowry to draw even.
"With the exception of the first inning, Wolf pitched really well," Linden said. "He was mixing speeds well and had that big slow curveball working."
But Feliz drilled a 2-0 offspeed pitch from Wolf just over the fence in right-center field with two outs in the sixth for the Giants' first hit since Bonds' blast and a 5-4 edge.
"I didn't pull it, I just went with the pitch and hit it out," Feliz said.
"Petie did a good job right there," Bochy said. "He got enough of it. That was the hit we were looking for."
San Francisco tacked on an insurance run in the eighth, when Ray Durham singled home Dave Roberts. Bonds started the rally by singling on a 98 miles-per-hour fastball from Los Angeles reliever Jonathan Broxton.
Roberts pinch-ran and stole second base. Bonds finished 2-for-4 and tied Pete Rose for fifth on the all-time runs list with 2,165.
Lowry (2-2) yielded four runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings with five walks and four strikeouts. Three relievers bridged the gap to closer Armando Benitez, who worked a perfect ninth for his sixth save.
Wolf (3-2) allowed five runs and six hits in six frames.
"I went out there with the mindset of being aggressive," Wolf said. "With Barry I just left the ball up and he's hot right now."
Rich Aurilia singled home a run off Wolf just prior to Bonds' homer. But Nomar Garciaparra drove in the Dodgers' first run with a groundout and Russell Martin singled home a run later in the first.
Consecutive doubles by Martin and Ramon Martinez produced a run in the fourth and Rafael Furcal tied the game with an RBI single to center field.
Furcal and Martin had two hits apiece for Los Angeles, which has lost three straight games.
"Today we fell behind," Little said. "We kept scrapping, but couldn't get it done tonight."
