Cameron, Gonzalez shine as Padres rout Cubs

Jun 17, 2007 - 10:37 PM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres let their bats do the swinging instead of their fists.

Greg Maddux picked up his 339th career win and Mike Cameron hit two of the Padres' five home runs in an 11-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs in the series finale on Sunday.

During Saturday's contest, things took a turn for the worst when Chicago's Derrek Lee was hit by a pitch by Chris Young, sparking a benches-clearing brawl. Lee, Young and Padres ace Jake Peavy were all ejected as a result.

"I felt that both teams put (Saturday) behind us," Padres manager Bud Black said. "I think both teams showed their professionalism in how we handled the situation today. We just played baseball the way it should be played."

But San Diego's offense did not give Chicago starter Rich Hill the chance for revenge, as Adrian Gonzalez doubled and scored on Cameron's two-run blast in the first inning.

"(Hill) was getting the ball up a little bit, "Cameron said. "With the short porches out there, I thought I would take a chance, and hit a couple of fly balls. The elements seemed to work in our favor."

The tandem continued to give Hill problems two frames later, as Gonzalez stroked a two-run blast - his 14th of the season - and Cameron followed with his eighth homer, giving the Padres a 5-1 edge.

Cameron has been stellar against Hill this season, hitting two homers in a 5-1 triumph at Petco Field on May 22. It was the center fielder's 12th career multi-homer game.

"I don't have the slightest idea why I hit Hill so well," Cameron said. "I know I have had good success against lefties who throw inside, like Hill and Randy Johnson."

San Diego wasn't done just yet as Gonzalez delivered a two-run double in the fifth and came around along with Cameron on Khalil Greene's three-run shot, pushing the lead to 9-1.

Gonzalez finished with a season high-tying four hits and Cameron hammered out three.

Maddux (6-3) allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings to improve to 12-3 against his former club. The 41-year-old spent his first seven seasons in the Windy City, winning his first of four Cy Young Awards here in 1992.

"It's been awesome for me to watch (Maddux) every day," Black said. "His stuff is still good, he has movement and good location. Anything he does doesn't surprise me."

Chicago got two runs off Maddux in the sixth, when Michael Barrett and Jacque Jones both recorded run-scoring doubles to cut the deficit to 9-3.

"It's a lot easier to pitch in this ballpark when your team gives you runs early," Maddux said. "The middle of our order took good care of me."

Hill lasted just three frames, surrendering five runs and five hits for his first defeat at Wrigley Field since falling to Milwaukee on April 24. The lefthander is winless in three careers starts against San Diego.

"San Diego has given me some problems this year," Hill said. "I will have to figure out what's going on against them."
