Mets outslug Dodgers in wild affair
Jul 20, 2007 - 7:09 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers looked right at home in a not-so-hitter-friendly park.Jose Reyes, Marlon Anderson and David Wright each drove in a pair of runs as the Mets outslugged the Dodgers, 13-9, on Thursday in a wild back-and-forth contest.
New York sent 11 men to the plate during a six-run first inning en route to a season-high 13 runs, then held on for dear life.
The 15 combined runs in the first three innings were the most in the 45-year history of Dodger Stadium, which is known as a pitcher's park.
"We were expecting a nice little pitchers' duel," Wright said. "But you have to adjust when the game gets offensive-minded. When pitchers fall behind, good hitting teams are going to see that and just wait for pitches to drive."
After New York nearly blew the huge lead, Anderson came through with a two-run single in a three-run third that put the Mets in command at 9-4.
"Everybody wants to have a chance to go out there and help the team win, and I got a chance to do that tonight," said Anderson, who was playing his first game with the Mets after being released by the Dodgers earlier this season.
When the Dodgers cut the deficit to 9-6 on a homer by Jeff Kent and a pinch RBI single by Olmedo Saenz, Reyes came through with a run-scoring base hit in the fifth to make it a four-run bulge.
Carlos Delgado and Ramon Castro hit back-to-back homers in the sixth and Carlos Beltran added a solo blast in the eighth to make it 13-8.
Aaron Sele (3-0) relieved an ineffective Tom Glavine and yielded an unearned run in three innings to pick up the win. Aaron Heilman worked a scoreless seventh and former Dodger Guillermo Mota tossed the final two frames.
"I think any time you're out there contributing, that's what I try to do, whether it's a few innings in a loss or pitching in an extra-inning game" Sele said.
Wright got the scoring underway in the first with a one-out, two-run double that scored Reyes and Anderson for a 2-0 lead.
Delgado walked and Castro added an RBI single that plated Wright. Shawn Green followed with a base hit that got past right fielder Matt Kemp, allowing Delgado and Castro to score for a 5-0 advantage.
Ruben Gotay added an RBI single off Derek Lowe (8-9) to cap the huge frame.
Lowe, who is winless in his last five starts, allowed a season-high nine runs - eight earned - in a season-low three innings. It was his shortest outing since September 20, 2005.
"The bottom line is, I made a lot of mistakes," Lowe said. The Dodgers, whose pitchers have surrendered 32 runs in the last three games, responded with a pair of runs in both the first and second frames to cut the deficit to 6-4.
Luis Gonzalez provided a two-run single in the first and Kemp hit a two-run homer in the second for Los Angeles, which had won six of seven.
Glavine, who was trying to move within a victory of becoming the 23rd pitcher in history to win 300 games, was no better than Lowe, allowing six runs and 10 hits in two-plus innings. The lefthander remained stuck on 298 wins after his shortest outing since July 29, 2003.
"I felt really good," Glavine said. "When I made good pitches, they laid off them, and when I made bad ones, they didn't."
