Cabrera, Marlins flex muscles in rout of Reds

Jul 21, 2007 - 2:47 AM MIAMI (Ticker) -- Miguel Cabrera had one home run on Friday, and his bid for another was denied by a fan. No matter, his teammates were quick to lend a hand.

Cabrera's two-run blast highlighted a three-run third inning and Dan Uggla and Miguel Olivo also homered as the Florida Marlins defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 10-2.

After Uggla homered in the sixth, Cabrera threatened to follow suit when he launched a fly ball toward the right field wall. As right fielder Norris Hopper left his feet near the wall, a fan reached into play to grab the souvenir.

"I thought I had it," Hopper said. "I heard it hit a glove and it wasn't mine, and I looked and didn't know what happened. Obviously, he reached over and grabbed it. ... That's a good catch."

"I didn't see anything," Cabrera said. "I don't know."

The end result was an out for Cabrera, an ejection for the fan - David Fridkin a 21-year-old whose favorite player is Cabrera - and a smattering of boos from the sparse crowd in attendance at Dolphin Stadium.

"You see more of that with the fan-friendly ballparks," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "It could cost you a ballgame. It really could."

As it turned out, it mattered little.

The trio of Hanley Ramirez, Uggla and Cabrera combined to go 8-for-14 with eight RBI and four runs scored.

Uggla added a two-run double and Cabrera brought him home with a single in the three-run seventh to halt the Reds' winning streak at four games.

"I'm glad to see the ball falling in for him," Gonzalez said. "There's going to be times in the course of the season where you go 1-for-20. ... Everybody swung the bats for us tonight."

Olivo blasted a two-run shot in the eighth for the Marlins, who have belted 16 homers in their last eight games.

Scott Olsen (8-7) scattered four hits, including a pair of solo home runs, in seven innings. He walked one and struck out five.

"He's capable of that," Gonzalez said of Olsen. "His fastball was 93-94 miles an hour. He was strike one with his fastball. He went after people and was pitching ahead. There was a more calmer guy on the mound."

Olsen was making his first start since receiving a two-game suspension without pay Monday for insubordination and conduct detrimental to the team.

"I felt in control," Olsen said. "That's probably the best way to describe it. I need to use it as a stepping stone. ... You've got to be aggressive and play your game and things will work out."

He said the suspension had nothing to do with his sterling performance.

"If that's the case, I'll suspend everybody," Gonzalez said. "We can take turns."

Armando Benitez shook off Thursday night's loss by pitching well in the eighth before Justin Miller tossed a scoreless ninth to seal the win.

Jeff Conine's home run in the fourth was the Reds' first hit off Olsen. For Conine, who had two tours of duty with Florida, it was his fifth homer of the season.

Brandon Phillips added his 20th shot of the season in the seventh.

Cincinnati starter Kyle Lohse (5-12) allowed seven runs - four earned - and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings.

"It's just frustrating because I made a lot of good pitches and the ones I left over the plate got crushed," Lohse said. "They've got some good hitters there. You can't do that."
