Pineiro pitches gem as Cardinals blank Padres

Aug 10, 2007 - 4:44 AM ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Joel Pineiro and Rick Ankiel helped the St. Louis Cardinals spoil Chris Young's return from the disabled list.

Pineiro pitched seven scoreless innings and Ankiel belted his first career home run to lift the Cardinals to a 5-0 victory over the San Diego Padres on Thursday in the finale of a four-game series.

The 28-year-old Pineiro (1-1), who had not registered a win in over two months, yielded just four hits with no walks and four strikeouts in his longest outing of the season. The Puerto Rican righthander was making just his second start of the year after being acquired by St. Louis at the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline from the Boston Red Sox.

"All the way around, I thought it was a great win for us," Pineiro said. "You keep your damage to a minimum, keep your pitch count low and you're going to be out there six or seven innings. And I did that today." Pineiro did not allow a runner to reach third base despite surrendering three doubles.

Ankiel, a former pitcher who is now an outfielder, gave the Cardinals some breathing room in the seventh inning with a three-run shot into the right field stands, extending the advantage to 5-0. The 28-year-old was recalled from Class AAA Memphis earlier Thursday.

Ankeil's blast came off Padres reliever Doug Brocail, who had worked 7 2/3 scoreless innings and retired 23-of-25 batters in that span before surrendering the homer.

"It's a special home run for me," Ankiel said. "I could not have written that any better. I just can't put it into words. I can't describe it. Unbelievable. That's a storybook dream."

"Short of winning the World Series, I think that's the happiest that I've seen our club," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "It's so emotional. He is such a special young man. For him to do that, in a close game, we needed every bit of those runs. What a moment."

Young (9-4), who was on the 15-day DL with a strained left oblique, gave up four runs, three hits and five walks with five strikeouts in six-plus frames. The 6-10 All-Star righthander, who had not lost since May 12, entered the contest with a major league-best 1.82 ERA.

"It wasn't my best, it wasn't my worst," Young said. "Overall, I felt pretty good. No problems. I came out of it healthy, and that's a step forward. Overall, I didn't feel like I pitched that poorly. Some timely mistakes on my part, but those happen over the course of the season."

Yadier Molina, who had three hits, gave St. Louis a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning with a single to right field that scored Scott Rolen.

"Today, we were playing like a team," Molina said. "I'm happy for that." Scott Hairston, who left the game in the sixth inning with strained left oblique, was the only Padre to record more than one hit.

"That's discouraging," San Diego manager Bud Black said of the injury. "It's almost in the identical spot that CY (Young) had."

It was just the Padres' third loss in their last eight games. They are 5-9 in their last 14 road contests.
