Greene, Bard help Padres score five runs in 11th, defeat Reds

Aug 11, 2007 - 5:25 AM CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres picked up stellar closer Trevor Hoffman.

After Hoffman blew a ninth-inning save, Khalil Greene drew a bases-loaded walk in the 12th inning and Josh Bard followed with a two-run triple as the Padres posted a 12-7 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night.

Rookie Kevin Kouzmanoff belted a two-run homer later in the frame and Adrian Gonzalez and Greene had three RBI each for San Diego, which had not scored more than five runs in any of its seven previous games.

"It was nice to win this game," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Roller-coaster games like this can build momentum. We used everybody but Joe Thatcher and Milton (Bradley). It was truly a team win."

The Padres, who had lost two straight and three of four, remained three games behind the National League West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks, who beat Washington, 11-4, on Friday.

After Cincinnati closer David Weathers (2-4) walked the bases loaded in the 12th, Greene hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Gonzalez from third for an 8-7 lead. After a double steal, Bard then lined a pitch from Weathers into the right field corner to make it 10-7.

"We went with our best guy," Cincinnati interim manager Pete Mackanin said. "He just didn't have it tonight. Three walks from him were unexpected. He just doesn't do that, but you can't expect him to be as good as he's been every time out."

Kouzmanoff then hit the first pitch he saw from Victor Santos deep into the seats in left to increase the lead to five.

Rookie Kevin Cameron (1-0), the seventh pitcher for Padres, earned his first major league victory by hurling two innings of one-hit relief.

"It was nice," Cameron said. "I got a scare out of a couple of fly balls, but I got through it. We got the win and I'll take it anyway I can get it."

Black praised his bullpen even though the momentum changed a couple times.

"(Rookie Jack) Cassel did a great job. Cameron did a great job," Black said. "There is a learning curve especially on the pitching side. We know Kevin has a good arm and good stuff, but we didn't want to rush him by putting him late in games. He's mastering some of that."

Hoffman was given the ball in the ninth with a 7-6 lead, but Brandon Phillips led off with a double into the left-center field gap. After Ken Griffey Jr. struck out, Scott Hatteberg belted a double off the left field wall to tie the game.

It was Hoffman's first blown save opportunity in 26 chances since blowing an attempt on April 27 vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"Even Trev did a great job," Black said. "He gave up the run but he got two big, big outs."

Hoffman sent the game to extra innings by getting Edwin Encarnacion and Alex Gonzalez to pop up with runners on first and second.

Greene gave San Diego a 7-6 lead in the seventh with a run-scoring single off Jared Burton.

"When you play 140-150 games, there are a lot of times when you come up with runners in scoring position and two outs," Greene said. "You don't want to overthink it. In my experience you don't come through more often then not, but you have to do it consistently. We used a lot of pitchers and they used a lot of pitchers. No one was going to quit."

Cincinnati took an early lead on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Conine and an RBI single by Adam Dunn in the first inning. Norris Hopper plated a run in the second with a bunt single, extending the advantage to 3-0.

However Brian Giles homered with a man on in the top of the third to cut San Diego's deficit to 3-2 before Griffey hit his 590th homer in the bottom of the frame for a 4-2 lead.

Gonzalez put the Padres in front in the fifth, when with two outs and runners on the corners, he belted his 19th homer of the season off Reds starter Matt Belisle to put San Diego up 5-4.

After Greene gave the Padres a two-run lead with a leadoff homer in the sixth off Reds reliever Gary Majewski, Cincinnati tied the score at 6-6 in the bottom of the frame on an RBI groundout by Mark Bellhorn and a run-scoring single by Hopper.
