Harang beats Zambrano as Cubs drop third straight

Aug 15, 2007 - 4:40 AM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Aaron Harang bested Carlos Zambrano on the mound and the Cincinnati Reds hung on for a 6-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.

Ken Griffey Jr. drove in two runs and Brandon Phillips added three hits and two runs for the Reds, who survived when Cubs rookie Mike Fontenot flied out to the right field wall with a runner on base in the ninth inning.

In the third matchup of the season between the aces, Harang (12-3) easily was the better pitcher on this night. He yielded five runs and four hits - three homers - in seven innings with a walk and seven strikeouts.

"Harang pitched great. He is a strike-throwing machine," Reds manager Pete Mackanin said. "Unfortunately what wore him out was having to run the bases in the eighth."

Harang retired the first 11 batters before giving up back-to-back blasts to Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez, who was playing in his first game since August 6 because of a sore right wrist. It also was the first home runs for either Cub this month.

"When I did make a mistake it was to the wrong guys," Harang said. "If I made those mistakes to any other hitters, the ball may have not been hit that well."

Zambrano (14-9) was tagged for 13 hits and six hits in seven frames. The righthander walked two and did not strike out a batter.

"Sometimes you just don't have your best stuff," Zambrano said. "Tonight I tried to do too much and the Reds hit all of my mistakes. All I can do is move on and get ready for my start."

Harang beat Zambrano, 5-1, on Opening Day and neither made it five innings in a 6-5 Cubs triumph on April 13. Harang lost a July 28 start against Chicago in which he departed after one inning because of lower back soreness, and Zambrano pitched 7 1/3 scoreless frames the next day in a 6-0 victory.

The Reds got to Zambrano for a pair of runs in each of the third and fourth frames. Griffey lined a two-run double to center field in the third, Josh Hamilton drove in a run with a groundout in the fourth and Jeff Keppinger lined a sharp single to left to plate the fourth run.

"I'm a ground ball pitcher," Zambrano said. "Every pitch that I thought was a good sinker was hit hard tonight."

Harang aided with the bat in the fourth, dropping down a sacrifice after Javier Valentin and Edwin Encarnacion led off the frame with singles. Phillips doubled and scored on a base hit by Valentin in the fifth for a 5-2 edge.

"Harang did his job on the mound and we did ours at the plate, "Phillips said. "We just tried to hit the ball where he (Zambrano) pitched it, Zambrano is not easy to hit but he left the ball up today."

Jacque Jones homered in the fifth and the Cubs cut their deficit to 6-4 on Matt Murton's RBI single in the seventh. An RBI single by Lee in the eighth made it 6-5, but Reds closer David Weathers got the last four outs, including the long flyout by Fontenot, to notch his 23rd save.

"There aren't many like that. That fly ball made my heart skip a beat," Mackanin said. "But outs are outs and we will take it."

Chicago (60-58), which has lost three straight, remained 1 1/2 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers (62-57) for first place in the National League Central. The Brewers lost to St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.
