Castillo's single in ninth helps Mets rally past Padres
Aug 22, 2007 - 3:54 AM FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- Carlos Beltran carried the New York Mets for eight innings before Luis Castillo finally brought them home.Beltran homered and drove in five runs before Castillo capped a two-run rally in the ninth off Trevor Hoffman as the Mets rallied for a 7-6 victory over the San Diego Padres in which a pair of elite closers faltered.
Pinch hitter Marlon Anderson tied the game with an RBI single and scored the winning run for New York, which won for the seventh time in eight games and maintained its five-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East. Philadelphia defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-4, earlier on Tuesday.
"When the game began we thought it would be an easy game," Beltran said. "They came back and Castillo got a big hit. We feel anyone can do the job."
After Lastings Milledge led off the bottom of the ninth with a base hit and moved to second on a sacrifice by Mike DiFelice, Anderson, pinch hitting for Billy Wagner (2-1), hit a run-scoring single up the middle to tie the contest at 6-6.
Jose Reyes singled to center to put runners on first and second and Castillo followed by lining a base hit to center off Hoffman (2-4) to plate Anderson, who beat center fielder Mike Cameron's throw home to end the game.
"I play to win. I know what I have to do," said Castillo, acquired recently from the Minnesota Twins. "I came here to help the team and I want to keep it going."
It was the fourth blown save of the season for Hoffman, baseball's all-time leader in the category.
"It doesn't matter how it happened. They got the job done," Hoffman said. "They're in first place for a reason."
Kevin Kouzmanoff had hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly off Wagner in the top of the inning to give the Padres a brief 6-5 lead.
"It's an ugly way to get a win," Wagner said.
Beltran drove in his fifth run of the game with a single in the eighth to tie the game at 5-5. Reyes had reached on an infield single off former Met Heath Bell, stole second and went to third on a groundout by Castillo. After a walk to David Wright, Beltran sliced a run-scoring single to right field.
"Speed kills, Reyes got on and that's how it rolls," Bell said.
The Padres had scored twice in the sixth and twice in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead.
Adrian Gonzalez reached on a two-out single off Scott Schoeneweis in the seventh and went to second when the ball was misplayed in right field by Milledge.
Former Met Cameron greeted reliever Jorge Sosa with an RBI double to left-center field and scored when Khalil Greene blooped an RBI single to center field to make it 5-4.
The Padres had cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth on Cameron's 16th home run and an RBI triple by pinch hitter Marcus Giles.
The Mets had taken a 4-1 lead behind the hot bat of Beltran, who belted a two-run homer in the first inning and a two-run double in the third.
"I'm hitting with runners in scoring position," Beltran said. "Good things are going to happen."
Beltran, named the National League Player of the Week on Monday, homered in his third straight at-bat when he belted a two-run homer in the first off Chris Young. His 25th home run of the season went the opposite way to left field and scored Castillo, who walked.
Young allowed just his fifth homer of the season and the second in his last 18 starts. The righthander is winless in three starts since coming off the disabled list, allowing four runs and five hits in five innings.
Young was forced to leave due to lower back tightness and will be re-evaluated on Wednesday.
"It's a little bit of a concern. That's why he came out after five," Padres manager Bud Black said. Young had been sidelined with an strained oblique and began experiencing the back problem after a start in St. Louis in August 9.
"I thought I was feeling better, but it's not letting me go 100 percent," Young said.
The Padres cut the lead to 2-1 in the third on an RBI single by Milton Bradley, settling for one run when Greene grounded out with the bases loaded. Bradley was making his first start since August 3 because of a hamstring strain.
The Mets answered with two runs in their half of the third. Starter John Maine singled and Castillo walked before Beltran lined a two-run double to right-center field field.
Beltran has six homers and 18 RBI since returning from the disabled list on August 10.
Cameron homered off Maine to lead off the sixth. Two outs later, Josh Bard doubled and scored when left fielder left fielder Moises Alou slipped while chasing a line drive by Giles that was ruled a triple.
Maine was charged with three runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings.
