Gonzalez' single lifts Dodgers over Giants in 10 innings
Sep 30, 2007 - 6:51 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Luis Gonzalez's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday night. With the score tied, 5-5, Andy LaRoche reached on an infield single to lead off the 10th against Giants reliever Dan Giese (0-2).
Chin-Lung Hu laid down a sacrifice bunt to move LaRoche into scoring position and Gonzalez delivered a pinch-hit single to center field off Jack Taschner, giving the Dodgers just their third win in the team's last 13 games.
"This was a good game and I just wanted to go up in that situation hoping for a mistake," Gonzalez said. "I got one and hit the ball hard the other way."
Dodgers closer Takashi Saito (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings to get his first win since May 1.
"He (Saito) came in and did a great job shutting them down and giving us a chance to win the game," Dodgers catcher Russell Martin said.
The Dodgers blew a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. With one out and the bases loaded, Giants reliever Tyler Walker got Martin to strike out swinging and Delwyn Young grounded out to second to end the inning.
"I got some good pitches to hit and make something happen, but just ended up fouling them off," Martin said. "I just wanted to get the ball in the outfield and just couldn't get it done, but it was good that we ended up winning."
The Giants jumped on Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley early, scoring three runs in the top of the first.
"I just didn't have my best stuff from the get go," Billingsley said. "I wanted to go out and pitch a good game to end the season and go into next year on a good note."
After Dave Roberts and Kevin Frandsen both reached base to start the inning, Randy Winn delivered a two-run double to left, putting San Francisco on the board. Three batters later, Dan Ortmeier hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Winn and give the Giants a 3-0 advantage.
Ray Durham added an RBI single in the second to extend the Giants lead to 4-0 and knock the Dodgers righthander out of the game.
The Dodgers scored a pair in the bottom of the third and then took the lead with three runs in the fourth. Martin hit a solo home run and Juan Pierre added a two-run single to give Los Angeles a 5-4 edge.
"We played good fundamental baseball tonight," Dodgers manager Grady Little said. "It was a good game."
Ortmeier tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the fifth, with a solo home run to left off Los Angeles reliever Mark Hendrickson.
Billingsley lasted a career-low 1 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on six hits and three walks.
San Francisco starter Travis Blackley did not fare much better, giving up five runs on seven hits and one walk over 3 2/3 innings.
