Peavy, Padres send Orioles to ninth straight loss

Jun 20, 2007 - 7:14 AM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Jake Peavy keeps on winning and the Baltimore Orioles keep on losing.

Brian Giles hit a three-run home run and Khalil Greene drove in three runs as the San Diego Padres defeated the Orioles, 12-6, on Tuesday in interleague play.

Leading the National League with a 1.89 ERA, Peavy (9-1) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings. The righthander, who is 6-0 over his last nine starts, walked two and struck out seven in handing the Orioles to their ninth consecutive loss.

"I felt good, it's been a good couple of months," Peavy said. "I feel strong, I feel healthy. I know when I am healthy, I can be a very good major league pitcher. I've felt good this whole season."

The Padres provided Peavy, who has not allowed a home run in 75 consecutive innings, with three runs in second inning before blowing the game open in the sixth.

"It was just nice to put a three-spot up there for (Peavy)," Giles said. "I'm not a betting man but when you put a three-spot up there for Peavy, I like our chances."

Greene singled of Baltimore starter Steve Trachsel (5-5) with one out in the second and Chase Headley followed with a walk. After a sacrifice by Peavy, Giles connected for an opposite-field homer to right, his fourth of the season.

Greene, who finished with a career-high four hits, belted his ninth home run of the season in the fourth to to pad the lead, which grew to 5-0 an inning later on an RBI single by Mike Cameron.

"It's just about waiting for a good pitch to swing at," Greene said. "When things are going good, you get those hits. When things are going bad, you tend to press things a little bit."

After the Orioles broke through for three runs off Peavy in the sixth inning, San Diego posted six runs with two outs in the bottom of the frame courtesy of run-scoring hits by Jose Cruz Jr., Russell Branyan, Adrian Gonzalez, Cameron and Greene.

"It was nice that we were able to drive in some runs there," Giles said. "It seems to me when you get some guys on and don't drive them in, it comes back to bite you. You would like to think three are enough, but they are never enough. Tonight was a prime example of that."

Trachsel allowed five runs, six hits and three walks while striking out five in 4 2/3 innings.

"We swung the bats right from the first guy to the end," San Diego manager Bud Black said. "Trachsel is the type of pitcher where you have to be patient. He isn't going to give you much and he is going to work around the plate. I thought we had some really good at-bats, drew our walks and didn't really expand the zone when we swung our bats."

Miguel Tejada had two hits and drove in three runs for the Orioles, who were playing their first game since firing manager Sam Perlozzo on Monday. Baltimore bullpen coach Dave Trembley, serving as manager on an interim basis, saw the team lose for the 14th time in 16 games.

"I was real focused on letting the guys play, let them concentrate on what we need to do to get a win," Trembley said. "But the home run ball really hurt us tonight. Especially in this ballpark and on the road you have to stay away from the big inning, and we did not do that."
