Blue Jays edge Rockies in 10th-inning thriller
Jun 23, 2007 - 4:48 AM TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Colorado Rockies' smiles turned upside down real quick on Friday night.John McDonald drove in the game-tying runs and catcher Chris Iannetta's throwing error plated the winning run in the 10th inning as the Blue Jays rallied for a 9-8 triumph over the Colorado Rockies .
Trailing, 8-6, in the 10th, Matt Stairs, Aaron Hill and rookie Curtis Thigpen all singled against Rockies closer Brian Fuentes (0-1) to load the bases for McDonald, who lofted a soft single into shallow left-center.
"I just wanted to keep the rally going," McDonald said. "(Fuentes) threw me a changeup and I was just fortunate to get the barrel on it."
With Thigpen charging into third, Iannetta's throw sailed into left field, allowing him to score the game-winning run and end Colorado's three-game winning streak.
"I thought I had (Thigpen) at third," Iannetta said. "As soon as I released it I just threw it high. I just made a bad throw."
"It was ill-advised," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. "Those things are going to happen once in a while. Nobody likes it but they happen."
Brian Wolfe (1-0) got the final out of the 10th for Toronto to pick up his first major league win.
"That was pretty nice," Wolfe said. "It feels good to get the first (win) under my belt. I was just glad I got into the game where I could help the team."
It was change of emotions for the Rockies, who scored two runs in the top half, when rookie Troy Tulowitzki delivered a two-run homer to left field off Jays reliever Jeremy Accardo.
"Sometimes you have those days, but it always helps when your offense picks you up," Accardo said. "All that really matters is that we got the win."
"When you're up by two and you have to get three outs you always think you're going to win," Tulowitzki said. "Fuentes has been so dominating as our closer so for that to happen it was kind of like a shock."
Tulowitzki showed his teammates he could battle through pain after getting spiked in his left knee in the first inning sliding into home plate.
It was a disappointing birthday for Brad Hawpe, who had RBI single in the third and delivered a two-run blast for his 13th homer in the fifth.
The Blue Jays got back in the game behind the efforts of Troy Glaus, who laced a two-run double in the fifth and lofted a sacrifice fly two frames later to tie it at 6-6.
"We battled back," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "We haven't had a whole lot of breaks this year, but we got one (Friday). It wasn't easy but the guys really hung in there."
Rockies starter Jason Hirsh allowed five runs and five hits in 4 1/3 frames in his second straight no-decision.
The Rockies were playing in Canada for the first time since facing the Washington-Montreal franchise on May 6, 2004.
Toronto starter Josh Towers surrendered five runs and a season-worst 11 hits in four innings to remain winless in his last three outings. In two career starts against the Rockies, he was been tagged for nine runs in nine frames.
"I hung a lot of pitches," Towers said. "I made a pretty bad pitch to Hawpe obviously in that fifth inning, but our bullpen really stepped up and did an outstanding job."
