White Sox homer four times in seventh, top Devil Rays

Aug 28, 2007 - 1:21 AM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago White Sox finally showed some life on Monday, hitting four home runs in the seventh inning en route to a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The win snapped the White Sox's five-game losing streak, which included a four-game weekend sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox, where they were outscored 46-7. The loss snapped Tampa Bay's three-game winning streak.

Trailing 4-0, the White Sox reeled off three consecutive home runs off Tampa Bay starter Edwin Jackson, who cruised through the first six innings. It was the first time the White Sox hit four home runs in an inning since August 21, 2005.

A.J. Pierzynski started the barrage with his 13th homer to right field, then Jermaine Dye followed with a shot over the left field wall for his 26th home run. Juan Uribe made it three straight by smacking his 15th homer of the season to left-center field.

Danny Richar doubled to chase Jackson from the game, and Devil Rays reliever Dan Wheeler struck out the next two batters.

But Josh Fields smacked a 1-0 offering from Wheeler into the left field seats for a two-run shot to put Chicago ahead 5-4. It was the rookie's 17th homer of the season.

Wheeler (1-6) took the loss despite striking out the side.

The seventh-inning offensive surge made a winner of Jose Contreras (7-16), who entered the game having lost each of his last nine starts. His last win came on June 18 at home against the Florida Marlins.

The veteran Cuban righthander pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out eight.

Mike MacDougal pitched a scoreless eighth inning, bridging the gap to closer Bobby Jenks who pitched a perfect ninth to record his 36th save.

The Devil Rays got on the board in the second inning when rookie Delmon Young hit a two-run blast, his 10th home run of the season.

Tampa Bay tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Akinori Iwamura hit sacrifice fly to right, scoring Greg Norton to make it 3-0, and B.J. Upton singled home Carlos Pena in the sixth.

Jackson allowed four runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out a pair.
