Final/11
Cust leads Athletics past Tigers
Jun 4, 2008 - 7:00 AM OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Kurt Suzuki scored on Jack Cust's infield single with two outs in the 11th inning Tuesday, giving the Oakland Athletics a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers.Rookie Daric Barton laced a leadoff single to right field off Bobby Seay (0-1) to open the 11th inning and was replaced by pinch runner Rajai Davis, who advanced to second on Carlos Gonzalez's sacrifice. Suzuki then hit Freddy Dolis' pitch straight to shortstop Edgar Renteria, who was able to get Davis at third for the second out.
Mark Ellis kept the frame going with a single to left and Bobby Crosby drew a walk to load the bases for Cust, who slapped a dribbler to first and was able to beat first baseman Miguel Cabrera to the bag for an infield single, allowing Suzuki to score the winning run.
Chad Gaudin (5-3) picked up the win after tossing two scoreless innings.
The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the fifth before Eric Chavez belted his first homer of the season - a three-run shot - off Armando Galarraga in the bottom of the inning to knot the game.
Carlos Guillen's RBI single in the seventh put Detroit back in front, but the bullpen stumbled as Travis Buck delivered a run-scoring base hit to left in the eighth to make it 4-4.
Curtis Granderson, Placido Polanco and Cabrera each drove in a run in the fifth for Detroit, which saw Dontrelle Willis make his first start since coming off the disabled list with a leg injury.
The lefthander worked four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
Oakland starter Dana Eveland gave up three runs and three hits in 4 1/3 frames. The lefthander struck out three but issued seven walks.
