Rays seek third straight win vs. Royals
Jul 27, 2008 - 2:16 PM Tampa Bay (61-42) at Kansas City (46-59) 2:10 pm. EDTKANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- The first-place Tampa Bay Rays are getting healthy against the lowly Kansas City Royals. Andy Sonnanstine takes the hill on Sunday as the Rays aim for a third straight win in the finale of a four-game series.
Tampa Bay, which holds a two-game lead over Boston in the American League East, had lost 10 of it last 16 games before meeting up with the Royals. Carl Crawford hit a go-ahead RBI triple in the eighth inning lifting the Rays to a 5-3 victory on Saturday.
The Rays hopes Sonnanstine (10-5, 4.54 ERA) can shake off a pair of bad outings and led them to their first three-game winning streak since a season-best seven game run from June 29-July 6.
The 24-year-old righthander has dropped his last two starts, allowing 12 runs and 14 hits over his last 12 1/3 innings. Sonnanstine may get some support from Carlos Pena, who has dominated Kansas City pitching recently. Pena, who homered for the second straight game Saturday, is hitting .435 (20-for-46) with seven home runs, 17 RBI in his last 12 games against the Royals.
Kyle Davies takes the hill for the Royals, who have lost five of six. Davies (3-2, 4.58) has not won since June 17, and is 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in his last five starts.
