Renteria helps Tigers avoid sweep
Aug 14, 2008 - 10:14 PM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Edgar Renteria made sure the Detroit Tigers avoided a four-game sweep.Renteria snapped a tie with a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning Thursday, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 5-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Tigers trailed 1-0 entering the eighth, but knotted the score on an RBI single by Miguel Cabrera. After back-to-back walks to Gary Sheffield and Matt Joyce, Renteria roped a double to center field, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead.
"I've always had success in that situation, looking for that situation ," Renteria said. "I'm getting comfortable."
Brandon Inge followed with a two-run single to complete the five-run frame.
"Just a very good inning for us," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "A very professional inning."
Armando Galarraga (11-4) pitched eight outstanding innings, surrendering one run and six hits, striking out six and walking a pair.
The lone Toronto run came in the fifth inning when Lyle Overbay hit his ninth homer of the season over the center- field wall.
"I'm glad to be able to score some runs because Galarraga did an incredible job," Inge said. "He's been tremendous all year. He eats up innings, he's great out there and he's not afraid of anything."
Galarraga later allowed two-out singles to Joe Inglett and Marco Scutaro before Alex Rios hit into an inning-ending fielder's choice.
Galarraga also allowed a one-out triple to Rios in the eighth, but retired Vernon Wells and Matt Stairs on groundouts to get out of the inning.
"He was just outstanding," Toronto manager Cito Gaston said. "We had opportunities to score, but he just kept shutting us down."
Toronto starter Jesse Litsch outdueled Galarraga through the majority of the contest, tossing seven scoreless frames. The righthander scattered four hits and walked two while striking out three.
"I felt very conformable and confident out there. You have to pitch your game whether its Triple A or the majors," Litsch said. "I was able to hit the zone with all my pitches, but the sinker was most effective for me. I was able to stick with my game plan.
"It was super taking three of four from a good team like the Tigers."
Jesse Carlson relieved Litsch to start the eighth and got Curtis Granderson to fly out. Jason Frasor (1-2) replaced Carlson and walked Placido Polanco. Two batters later, Cabrera singled home Polanco to tie the score.
Frasor was tagged for all five runs while retiring just one batter. He allowed two hits and three walks.
"Jesse (Litsch) pitched a great game - I just didn't have the guys ready in the bullpen to do the job," Gaston said. "I thought the Frasor would be my best bet, but he couldn't get the job done."
