Ramirez, Wise spark White Sox in win over Royals
Sep 20, 2008 - 4:17 AM By Pat Madden PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterKANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Alexei Ramirez belted his third grand slam of the season and Dewayne Wise added two solo home runs as the Chicago White Sox toppled the Kansas City Royals, 9-4, on Friday.
Ramirez's blast sparked a six-run rally in the fourth inning against Brian Bannister, who surrendered seven runs and eight hits in five frames. Nick Swisher scored on a wild pitch and Orlando Cabrera laced an RBI single to cap the outburst.
"I went out there not to hit a home run, but to put the ball in play," Ramirez said. "I was studying what pitches he had. When I hit it, I noticed the whole team had an intensity."
Ramirez tied a major league rookie record with the grand slam, becoming only the second first-year player to hit three. Shane Spencer of the New York Yankees also accomplished the feat in 1998.
"It was exciting," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "The at-bat he put on that particular time was great. He fouled off a lot of pitches. I thought Bannister threw a lot of good pitches, but he went out there and hit it. We needed that.
"We struggled in the New York series with scoring runs, and to score four with two outs and two strikes and put up six in the inning, makes us feel pretty good."
With the victory, Chicago (85-68) extended its lead over Minnesota (83-71) in the American League Central to 2 1/2 games. The Twins dropped an 11-1 decision to the Tampa Bay Rays.
Bannister (8-16) took the loss for Kansas City, which saw its season-high seven-game winning streak snapped.
"Alexei kind of threw his bat at the ball," Bannister said of the dooming grand slam. "He got out in front of it. He did a good job of keeping that ball fair. I just wanted to keep throwing strikes and keep pounding the zone."
Jim Thome hit a solo homer in the fifth and Wise followed suit in both the seventh and ninth innings to secure the victory for Mark Buehrle (14-11), who allowed three runs and six hits in six effective innings.
"You can't ask much more of him," Guillen said. "He was out there one day earlier than he should be and threw some big innings. Only one guy gave him trouble, (Mark) Teahen, who always wears him out. For some reason, he owns him. Besides that, he threw well."
The lefthander improved his career record against the Royals to 19-8.
"I felt great," Buehrle said. "It was one of those days when I didn't feel too good in the bullpen. Once I got in the game, I felt like I was falling behind on everything. It was one of those games where I felt good but had to battle through."
Teahen hit a three-run shot in the fourth and David DeJesus added a run-scoring single in the seventh for the Royals.
"If we could take away that fourth it would be a different game," Royals manager Trey Hillman said. "They scored all their runs with two out. That inning just snowballed on him. If he could get a popup or a grounder at somebody maybe he doesn't even load the bases."
