Peavy powers Padres past Marlins
May 4, 2008 - 3:39 AM By Chris Stock PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterMIAMI (Ticker) -- Despite getting his first win in three weeks, San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy was peaved.
Peavy threw 5 2/3 solid innings and Tadahito Iguchi hit a go-ahead, two-run double to lead the Padres to a 7-2 victory over the Florida Marlins on Saturday.
The 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner, Peavy allowed two runs and five hits with eight strikeouts. However, the righthander was annoyed that he could not go longer.
Peavy was given a 6-2 lead, after Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez's error allowed three unearned runs to score in the fifth, but left after issuing a two-out walk to Luis Gonzalez in the sixth due to a high pitch count.
Peavy threw 70 of 112 pitches for strikes and failed to go at least six innings for the first time this season. Cla Meredith got the final out of the inning and three relievers finished off the Marlins to give Peavy his first win since April 11.
"I made a reliever come in the middle of an inning and I don't like doing that," Peavy said. "I wanted to finish the (sixth) inning. I wasn't frustrated with anyone but myself. Obviously, Buddy (manager Bud Black) didn't think that I could or didn't want me to."
One of Peavy's only mistakes came in the first when he allowed a two-run homer to Mike Jacobs that put Florida up, 2-1.
"It was a pretty good pitch and off the plate," Peavy said. "Obviously, he had to be trying to do that. I've gotten a lot of out on that pitch over the last few years. It was just the wrong pitch to throw there."
San Diego responded in the second as Iguchi doubled off the scoreboard in left field for a 3-2 edge.
"Our team has been struggling as of late and, after we gave up the lead, it was big to comeback into the game and I think it got us going," Iguchi said through a translator.
A pivotal play came in the fifth, when the Padres took advantage of a miscue by Ramirez. Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Kouzmanoff each hit one-out singles, and Jim Edmonds walked to load the bases.
Khalil Greene then hit a grounder to second that appeared to be an inning-ending double play. However, Ramirez could not handle second baseman Dan Uggla's toss and was charged with an error, allowing Gonzalez and Kouzmanoff to score. Josh Bard then plated Greene with a double for a 6-2 advantage.
"It was one of the first breaks we have had in a long time where something went our way," Black said.
Gonzalez capped the scoring in the seventh, blasting a 367-foot solo shot to left in the ninth off Logan Kensing for his seventh homer of the season.
Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco (1-3) allowed six runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings.
"I tried to make pitches when I could, and tried to keep battling as much as I could," Nolasco said.
