Giants hold off Rockies to end losing skid
May 21, 2008 - 5:35 AM By Brady Delander PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterDENVER (Ticker) - The San Francisco Giants ended one unwanted team streak while Randy Winn kept his own positive run alive.
Winn rapped a double to extend his hitting streak to a league-best 15 consecutive games, and the Giants ended a six-game losing skid by edging the Colorado Rockies 6-5 in a National League West game Tuesday night at Coors Field.
Starter Tim Lincecum (6-1) struck out six batters in six innings of work to pick up the win.
In my eyes this was probably one of my worst outings ever. I battled but I never really want to go through that again," Lincecum said. "I had to work a little too hard in that one."
Brian Wilson picked up his 13th save of the season despite putting the tying run in scoring position in the ninth.
"I didn't want to blow Timmy's win," Wilson said of his tense inning on the mound. "I didn't want to let the team down after a hard day's work, and I took a deep breath and realized what was at stake."
Colorado's Aaron Cook (6-3) dropped his second straight decision after giving up four runs on 10 hits in seven innings.
"I settled down in the last three innings, but you can lose a game in the first inning and that's what I did tonight," Cook said. "But no matter what the score is we play 27 outs hardand I believed the guys were going to win it at the end there."
The Giants (18-29) jumped ahead early when Winn hit a two-out double off the fence in left field. Bengie Molina followed with deep fly ball to center field that was initially ruled a home run but correctly overturned to a double for one of his three hits.
Winn scored on the play despite the overrule, and then Aaron Rowand plated Molina with a bloop single to shallow right field for a quick 2-0 lead in the first. In the next inning, Rich Aurilia, who would finish with three hits, mashed a leadoff home run to give San Francisco a 3-0 advantage.
The Rockies (18-28) worked back into the game in the bottom of the second when Cook slapped a single down the right field line to score Omar Quintanilla.
Lincecum issued back-to-back walks to open the third, and Matt Holliday eventually scored on an infield groundout by Brad Hawpe to make it a 3-2 Giants lead.
The teams traded runs in the fourth. John Bowker scored for San Francisco on Omar Vizquel's sacrifice bunt, and the Rockies kept pace when Quintanilla scored on a wild pitch from Lincecum.
The Giants added some insurance in the top of the ninth with a solo homer from Fred Lewis and an RBI-single off the bat of Rowand.
"I was happy to add on to the lead because we really didn't want to play an extra-inning game," Lewis said.
And it was needed as Clint Barmes hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to make it a one-run game.
"This is a park where the game is never over," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's important that you do add on (runs), and we haven't been doing that."
San Francisco had played in 21 games decided by one run (10-11), the most in the majors.
Also, Bochy moved into a tie for 50th place all-time with 1,040 wins as a manager.
