Loney drives in five as Dodgers pound Rockies
Jul 22, 2008 - 6:19 AM By Brady Delander PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterDENVER (Ticker) -- Joe Torre has a name for games that rack up 26 runs and 38 hits like the one his Los Angeles Dodgers took part in Monday night.
"Arena baseball," the manager said after his team's 16-10 victory over the Colorado Rockies. "Was that exciting enough for you?"
The Dodgers put eight runs on the board in the first inning and never looked back. James Loney had a triple among three hits and five RBI and Jeff Kent went 3-for-3 with a double for the Dodgers, who scored 10 runs in the first inning in a win over the Rockies on April 27.
"A lead is never enough no matter how big," Loney said. "You never know what's going to happen so you want to keep adding on."
Russell Martin also had three hits in a game that was decided almost as quickly as it began.
The first five Dodger batters collected hits, including the initial run-scoring double by Andre Ethier, before an out was registered. Leadoff batter Matt Kemp hit two doubles before the second out was recorded.
"We got some big hits in the first inning, scored a lot of runs, and we just kept going after that," Kemp said. "Everybody got a hit today. They out-hit us but we scored more runs, so we're happy right now."
Every Los Angeles player in the starting lineup except for Andruw Jones scored a run in the first inning, and the offensive onslaught didn't stop there.
The Dodgers scored four runs over the next three innings, highlighted by Kent's two-run single in the third that made it 11-0.
Loney added a bases-loaded triple to right field and came in to score on a double-play ball that stretched the lead to 16-3 in the fifth.
"When you get eight runs it's a nice lead. But in this ballpark you are certainly not safe," Torre said. "We scored in five straight innings; they scored in seven straight innings. I'm just glad we had the big cushion."
Kip Wells, who was making his first appearance since April 28 after overcoming a blood clot in his right hand, recorded one out before he departed amid boos Wells (1-2) threw 40 pitches and allowed eight runs - seven earned - on seven hits in the opening frame.
"We've still got to find some answers with our starting rotation, there's no doubt about that," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "I'm proud of the way the guys responded coming to hit in the bottom of the first inning down 8-0."
The Rockies (43-58) racked up 20 hits to the Dodgers' 18.
Matt Holliday went 3-for-3 with a home run and RBI double and Troy Tulowitzki went 5-for-5 with a double and sacrifice fly in his first appearance after a second stint on the disabled list. It was Tulowitzki's first career five-hit game.
