Smith lifts Rockies past Marlins

Aug 4, 2008 - 12:02 AM By Christopher Stock PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Pinch hitter Seth Smith delivered a go-ahead single in the top of the ninth inning Sunday to give the Colorado Rockies a 3-2 win over the Florida Marlins and a split of the four-game series.

Batting for pitcher Taylor Buchholz, Smith slapped a single up the middle past diving second baseman Dan Uggla. The hit scored Cory Sullivan, who went in run after Joe Nelson (2-1) walked Chris Iannetta to lead off the ninth. Sullivan stole second and scored three batters later.

"I usually don't look for anything," Smith said. "I try to react. He threw a couple fastballs and a couple changeups, and left a fastball over the plate and I got the barrel to it."

Closer Brian Fuentes loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with one out, but got Jorge Cantu to pop out and Josh Willingham to fly out to end the game. Fuentes picked up his 20th save in 24 opportunities. Buchholz (4-3) tossed a scoreless eighth for the win.

"I was trying to challenge them with my fastball," Fuentes said. "My off-speed wasn't there, but my fastball is probably my best pitch. With the bases loaded, I don't want to walk in that last run. I wanted them to make contact and get a double play and fortunately I got a couple of pop-ups."

Willingham lofted a sacrifice fly in the first inning and Mike Jacobs hit his 23rd homer - a solo shot off of Glendon Rusch - in the second to give the Marlins a 2-0 lead.

"We didn't add the runs," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We had some opportunities throughout the course of the game and we couldn't get it done."

Florida starter Scott Olsen allowed only one hit in six innings. He held the Rockies hitless until Willy Taveras reached on an infield-single with two outs in the sixth.

"Individually, I'm pleased," Olsen said. "I threw a lot of pitches in the third and fourth innings when I had a couple walks, which prevented me from getting further in the game. You want to win, no matter how you do it. If I give up eight runs and we win, I'm happy."

But in the seventh, Doug Waechter gave up a solo home run to Matt Holliday. It was Holliday's 21st homer of the season and sixth in eight games against the Marlins.

"(Holliday's) good," Gonzalez said. "He's an All-Star and he's impressive."

Troy Tulowitzki tied the game with an RBI single off of Nelson in the eighth.
