Drew lifts Diamondbacks over Rockies
Sep 28, 2008 - 4:33 AM PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Even though the Arizona Diamondbacks are out of the National League playoff picture, that did not stop them from executing some late-inning heroics.Stephen Drew capped a three-run eighth inning with a two-run single that gave the Diamondbacks a 6-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday.
"It was good, I wish we could have got the win for (Brandon Webb), but it's one of those things that didn't happen," Drew said. "He pitched well, battled through some things, and that's how he's been all year. He has been great for us."
Coming into the season, many prognosticators tabbed Arizona as the team to beat in the NL West. Yet, a second-half plummet doomed the Diamondbacks' chances and helped the Los Angeles Dodgers claim the division title.
Arizona showed plenty of fight in this meaningless contest, though.
Adam Dunn led off the eighth with a double and scored when Mark Reynolds smacked a single off Manny Corpas (3-4). Miguel Montero was hit by a pitch and Jeff Salazar had an infield single to set up Drew's decisive hit.
"It's big to get (Webb) a no-decision, but at the same time, it's big for us," Reynolds said. "I believe that assures that we finish .500, and you have to look at the positives. I was standing on third base, I was expecting (Drew) to get a hit, and he did. We ended up winning, so it was a good day."
Dunn belted his 40th homer of the season before Webb laced a two-run double to give the Diamondbacks a 3-1 lead in the fourth, but the Rockies rallied for three runs in the following inning.
Dunn's shot made him the eighth player to hit at least 40 homers in five consecutive seasons.
Webb was denied his 23rd win of the season but struck out 11 while allowing four runs and six hits in seven innings. Brandon Lyon (3-5) tossed a perfect eighth and Chad Qualls notched his ninth save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
"I'm glad (Webb) got a no-decision instead of a loss out of it, but we came back nicely again," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "We had some quality at-bats there again when we were down. ... (It) seems like our at-bats late in the game all of a sudden now are good."
Brad Hawpe hit an RBI triple in the first off Webb to open the scoring.
"We've shown up pretty well against some of these top-flight pitchers," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "We battled. ... You've got to beat him. (Webb) usually doesn't give up too much."
