Greinke goes six strong to lead Royals over Indians
Sep 13, 2008 - 11:29 PM By Todd Krepop PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterCLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Zack Greinke knew he had a chance to defeat the Cleveland Indians when he saw he wasn't pitching against Cliff Lee.
Greinke pitched six effective innings to lead the Kansas City Royals to an 8-3 victory over the Indians in the first game of a day-night doubleheader on Saturday.
Ross Gload and Alberto Callaspo drove in two runs apiece and Mark Teahen recorded three hits to pace the 15-hit attack for the Royals, who claimed just their second win in six games.
"If we can continue to get games like this, it will help build confidence not only for this year but for next," Royals manager Trey Hillman said.
The game was a make-up of a rainout on May 2, but this contest also was in jeopardy as it poured during the late morning and early afternoon, forcing the start of the game to be delayed by 2 hours, 14 minutes.
Greinke was winless in his previous two starts against the Indians, but this time around he didn't have to face 22-game winner, Lee.
"That helped," Greinke said. "I left that up to Gil (Meche) yesterday."
Greinke (11-10) held the Indians to three runs and nine hits. He walked only one and struck out five, then watched as his offense erupted for six runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
"I just did all right, everybody else was tremendous," Greinke said. "The main thing was I didn't give (Cleveland) a lot of pitches to hit."
The Royals scored twice in the sixth off Fausto Carmona to take a 4-2 lead.
Billy Butler drew a leadoff walk and Teahen doubled to the gap in right-center. Gload and Callaspo followed with consecutive RBI singles before Carmona even recorded an out.
Kansas City broke open the game with a four-run seventh.
David DeJesus doubled off Carmona to start the inning, advanced to third on Mike Aviles' infield hit and scored on Carmona's wild pitch. Carmona (8-7) walked Butler to end his afternoon, but relievers Rich Rundles and Edward Mujica allowed consecutive RBI singles to Gload, Callaspo and John Buck.
"We were able to be aggressive with Carmona and get his pitches up," DeJesus said. "The seventh gave us breathing room and relaxed the game."
After allowing seven runs in his last start, the third-year righthander yielded seven runs and 11 hits in 6 1/3 innings while walking three batters. Disgusted by his outing, Carmona threw his hat and glove into the stands after being removed during the seventh.
"That was a mistake," Carmona said through an interpreter. "I wasn't trying to show up my manager. It has been a difficult season."
Cleveland outfielder Shin-Soo Choo drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly in the opening inning, but stranded four runners over his next two at-bats as the Indians continually failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
