Teahen, Shealy help Royals complete sweep of Indians
Sep 14, 2008 - 5:29 AM CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Mark Teahen recorded his second career multi-homer game and Ryan Shealy chipped in with a career-high four hits - including a solo shot - as the Kansas City Royals completed a sweep of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cleveland Indians with an 8-4 triumph in the nightcap. The Royals, who posted an 8-3 victory in the opener, scored 16 runs and banged out 31 hits en route to their first doubleheader sweep of the Indians since July, 2 1984.
"Sixteen runs against some decent pitching says a lot," Kansas City manager Trey Hillman said. "We didn't give away too many at-bats today. Hopefully, this will give us a kick in the rear and help us finish the season strong."
The 16-hit effort by Kansas City in this one benefited Robinson Tejeda (2-2), who was making his first start of the season. The righthander worked five innings, allowing one run and two hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
"I thought he would have a chance of going four innings," Hillman said. "He found something extra to get that win."
Three relievers bridged the gap to Joakim Soria, who retired slugger Travis Hafner with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth to pick up his 37th save in 40 opportunities.
Cleveland starter Bryan Bullington (0-1) was rocked in his first major league appearance since September 30, 2006. The former first overall pick of Pittsburgh allowed six runs and eight hits in just 4 2/3 innings.
"I wish I would have done better," Bullington said. "I hadn't pitched in a week and a half, but that wasn't the problem."
Shealy staked the Royals to a 1-0 lead with a one-out solo home run in the second, blasting a 3-2 offering over the wall in right-center field.
"I hit it good," Shealy said. "It got us off to a good start, and we went from there."
Teahen, who had three hits in the first game, hit a solo shot in the fourth to give the Royals a 2-1 edge. Kansas City tacked on another run later in the inning on Alberto Callaspo's RBI triple.
Teahen's second shot of the night capped the Royals' three-run fifth. Teahen blasted Bullington's 1-0 pitch into the right field seats for his 14th home run of the season and 6-1 bulge.
"It was a very nice day for him," Hillman said. "Mark appears to be swinging the bat more freely and getting more whip."
Miguel Olivo also contributed for Kansas City, delivering a two-run single in the fifth and plating another run in the ninth with a base hit. Shealy gave the Royals an 8-2 cushion two batters later with an RBI single.
"That was a first for me," Shealy said of his four-hit effort. "I hit some balls well but also found some holes."
Cleveland attempted to rally in the ninth as Ryan Garko belted a two-run homer before Asdrubal Cabrera and Grady Sizemore hit two-out singles. But Soria induced a groundout by Hafner after walking Shin-Soo Choo to load the bases, sealing the win.
"It was a tough day," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "We didn't hit the ball particularly well and we didn't pitch well. That makes for a long day."
