Padres-Brewers Preview
Aug 12, 2009 - 4:15 PM By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior WriterSan Diego (48-66) at Milwaukee (55-57), 8:05 p.m. EDT
There's something about Milwaukee Brewers pitching that brings out the best in the San Diego Padres' lineup.
Coming off their highest-scoring game of the season, the Padres look for a second straight victory over the struggling Brewers on Wednesday night at Miller Park.
Less than two weeks after scoring a season high in an 11-7 win over visiting Milwaukee on July 31, San Diego (48-66) topped that in a 13-6 victory over the Brewers in Tuesday's series opener.
Adrian Gonzalez became the first Padre and second player this season to go 6 for 6 in a nine-inning game as the visitors recorded a season-high 22 hits for their 10th win in 14 games.
"There's been a little resurgence in the lineup," manager Bud Black told the Padres' official Web site of his team hitting .301 over the last 14 contests.
Though the Padres rank last in the majors in runs (435) and batting average (.239), they've hit .378 and scored 29 runs while going 3-1 this season versus the Brewers (55-57), who've lost two in a row and four of six.
Gonzalez, San Diego's only All-Star, had five singles and drove in three runs during his career night. Freddy Sanchez, who's currently with San Francisco, also went 6 for 6 against the Chicago Cubs on May 25, while with Pittsburgh.
"It's a pretty cool accomplishment," said Gonzalez, who's is batting .471 with five RBIs this season against the Brewers. "It's more of a tribute to the rest of the guys, the whole team. I was able to do it in nine innings just because everybody hit."
Milwaukee, which has a 4.84 ERA on the season and a 6.62 ERA against San Diego, allowed its most hits since the Los Angeles Dodgers had 18 in a 17-4 victory Aug. 4.
"I don't have a whole lot to say," Brewers manager Ken Macha said.
Milwaukee turns to former reliever Carlos Villanueva (2-9, 6.05 ERA) as it tries to bounce back in this contest.
The right-hander, who'll be making his fourth straight start since joining the rotation last month, took the loss after allowing four runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 6-3 defeat at Houston on Friday. Villanueva is 0-2 with a 5.65 ERA in three starts.
In his only start against the Padres, Villanueva gave up two hits over five scoreless innings, but didn't receive a decision in a 6-1 win at San Diego on Aug. 2.
Kevin Correia (7-9, 4.51) took the loss in that contest against the Brewers despite giving up three runs and two hits in 6 1-3 innings.
The right-hander, who's 1-2 with a 4.79 ERA in four starts against Milwaukee, allowed two runs in six innings, but didn't receive a decision in a 6-2 win over the New York Mets on Friday.
Correia is 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA over his last three starts.
Mike Cameron and Bill Hall homered Tuesday for Milwaukee, which was coming off a 4-5 road trip that started with two losses in three games to San Diego.
