Ramirez, Coghlan homer to lead Florida to 10-3 win

Aug 16, 2009 - 10:18 PM MIAMI(AP) -- Chris Volstad joined his Florida teammates on their hitting tear - and he pitched a pretty good game, too.

Volstad hit a two-run single in a five-run second and the Marlins beat the Colorado Rockies 10-3 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Volstad's broken-bat single to right scored Dan Uggla and Cody Ross and snapped a 1-all tie. Coghlan followed with a three-run homer, his seventh of the season.

"I just put it in the right spot, I'll take it," Volstad said.

The huge advantage was sufficient for Volstad to win his fifth game in six decisions. Volstad (9-9) gave up one run, four hits, walked four and struck out five in five-plus innings.

"The team did another great job of scoring runs," Volstad said. "You can't ask for anything more as a pitcher."

Ross had four hits and Coghlan and Hanley Ramirez each homered and went 3 for 5 as Florida finished with 17 hits. The Marlins now have 10 or more hits in 12 straight games.

"I think hitting is contagious," Coghlan said. "For me, to be able to get some hits in front of Hanley and the guys behind me it's great. Everybody is seeing the ball well."

Rockies starter Aaron Cook (10-5) left after surrendering Ross Gload's bases-loaded RBI single in the third. Cook pitched 2 1-3 innings, allowed seven runs, eight hits, walked three and struck out two. He has lost two straight decisions after a seven-win streak.

None of the Colorado Rockies players or manager Jim Tracy were made available between games.

The Rockies scored twice in the seventh, cutting Florida's lead to 7-3. Pinch-hitter Ryan Spilporghs hit a run scoring double and later scored on Carlos Gonzalez's sacrifice fly off Florida reliever Dan Meyer, who replaced Volstad in the sixth.

Florida scored twice in the bottom of the seventh on Gload's sacrifice fly and Wes Helms' pinch-hit single. Ross' run-scoring single scored Ramirez in the eighth.

Gonzalez's solo homer in the top of the first put Colorado ahead 1-0. Gonzalez hit Volstad's 3-2 pitch over the fence in right for his fifth home run of the year.

The Marlins tied it in the bottom of the first on Ramirez's 18th home run of the season. Ramirez drove Cook's pitch above the wall in left.

NOTES: Marlins 1B Nick Johnson left the game in the top of the second with a right hamstring strain. Johnson flied out to left in his only at-bat in the first. Gload moved from right field to first base and Jeremy Hermida took over in right. ... Ian Stewart extended his hitting streak to eight with a two-out double in the eighth. ... Ramirez's home run off Cook was the first allowed by a Rockies starter in five games.
