Sep 27, 2006 - 3:39 PM Arizona (74-83) at San Francisco (76-81) 3:35 pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Two pitchers with vastly different results in their last outings battle when the Arizona Diamondbacks visit the San Francisco Giants in the finale of a three-game series on Wednesday.

Claudio Vargas (11-10, 4.86 ERA) gets the call for the Diamondbacks. Vargas was reasonably sharp in his last appearance, giving up two runs in 6 2/3 innings of a 2-0 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.

After struggling in August with a 5.51 ERA, Vargas has improved in September, going 1-1 with a 3.28 ERA.

The Giants counter with Jonathan Sanchez (3-0, 5.29), who makes his fourth career start.

The lefthander was hammered in his last start against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, giving up eight runs in two innings of a 13-12 loss.

Moises Alou hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Giants to a 4-2 victory over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for San Francisco.

Rookie Carlos Quentin hit a two-run homer for the Diamondbacks.
