Lowe looks to keep Dodgers atop NL wild card

Sep 27, 2006 - 4:23 PM LA Dodgers (83-74) at Colorado (74-83) 8:35 pm EDT

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers are back in control of their own postseason destiny and they hope to keep it that way.

The Dodgers face the Colorado Rockies in the second game of a three-game series on Wednesday.

Winners of four of their last five games, the Dodgers hold a one-game edge over the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League wild card chase, but trail first-place San Diego by two games in the NL West.

Greg Maddux registered his 332rd career win and Nomar Garciaparra and rookie Russell Martin combined to drive in seven runs for the Dodgers in Tuesday's 11-4 win over Colorado.

Derek Lowe (15-8, 3.57 ERA) goes for his seventh straight win for Los Angeles. In his last start, Lowe surrendered just five hits in seven scoreless innings of a 2-0 win against Arizona last Friday. He has only allowed one earned run over his past 14 frames.

His last setback came on August 9 against the Rockies when he gave up three runs and six hits in 8 2/3 innings. Lowe is 4-2 with a career 4.33 ERA vs. Colorado.

The Rockies send Aaron Cook (9-14, 4.11), who seeks his first win this month, to the mound. Cook was effective in his last outing, pitching six scoreless innings but did not figure in the decision in last Wednesday's game against San Francisco. The 27-year-old is 3-3 in eight career starts vs. Los Angeles.
