White Sox-Blue Jays Preview
Apr 13, 2010 - 4:41 AM By MATT BECKER STATS Senior WriterChicago (2-4) at Toronto (5-1), 7:07 p.m. EDT
It took a week, but Mark Teahen and Andruw Jones finally displayed the kind of power the Chicago White Sox were hoping for when they acquired them in the offseason.
Teahen and Jones look to build on their best games of the season and help the White Sox to another rare win against the Toronto Blue Jays when they continue their four-game series at Rogers Centre on Tuesday night.
Rogers Centre has been a house of misery for Chicago (3-4) in recent years, but the White Sox pulled out an 8-7, 11-inning victory in Monday's series opener. It marked Chicago's first win in Toronto since June 1, 2007, snapping a 10-game losing streak there. The team had managed only 19 runs during that skid.
This losing streak might have continued had it not been for the efforts of two of the newest White Sox.
Teahen hit a solo homer in the ninth to tie the game and tripled home the go-ahead run in the 11th, while Jones homered twice. Teahen, 1 for 14 in his first six games, finished with three RBIs and Jones, 1 for 8 to start the season, drove in four.
"I want them to give me a headache when I make the lineup," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I don't want to try digging through players, trying to make a lineup that can hit. If you hit, you're going to be in the lineup somewhere."
Guillen's going to be hoping this kind of offensive production continues, as scheduled starter Gavin Floyd (0-0, 3.00 ERA) has had no luck shutting down Toronto (5-2) in his career.
Floyd has an 8.10 ERA in losing all three career starts to the Blue Jays, and in two outings against them last season, the right-hander was tagged for six runs in each.
Floyd pitched well in his season debut against Cleveland on Thursday, but didn't get much help. He allowed two runs and five hits with seven strikeouts in six innings of a 5-3, 11-inning loss.
While Chicago's offense finally came to life in the series opener, Toronto, which saw a five-game winning streak come to an end Monday, has scored at least five runs in four of the last six games.
Vernon Wells has been one of the biggest contributors to this offensive outburst, as he's quickly putting a subpar 2009 behind him.
Wells, who had 15 homers and 66 RBIs last season, hit a two-run homer Monday, giving him five home runs and nine RBIs already. He didn't hit his fifth homer of 2009 until May 6 - his 30th game - and his sixth home run didn't come until June 20.
Wells will need to continue to carry Toronto's offense with All-Star second baseman Aaron Hill being placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a tender right hamstring. Manager Cito Gaston said the team wants to be cautious with Hill, who had a team-high 36 homers and 108 RBIs last season.
"I mean, if you had five or six days left in the season, you'd probably wrap it up and nurse it and get him through it," Gaston said. "But to play another six months with it? It's a little bit tough."
Gaston gives the ball to Ricky Romero (0-0, 1.29), who tries to continue his strong April pitching.
After going 2-0 with a 1.61 ERA in four April starts as a rookie last season, Romero allowed one run and five hits in Thursday's 3-1 win over Texas, but did not get a decision
This will be Romero's first appearance against Chicago.
